THE STORM. | • Tuesday's storm caused considerable damage throughout the district. ' Mauy fonees have been blown over. About two chains of a six-foot corrugated iron fence of the Presbyterian Boys' Home on the Windermere road frontage went beforo the gale. The driving rain also found the leaks in the flat roof at the' Memorial Hall. In the vestibule and the library, the water came pouring down tho walls. A number of valuablo books received a good soaking. Surprise Party. Recently a "surprise party'' visited the home of Mr and Mrs E. Townley, Sawyer's Arms road, Papanui. A most cnjoyablo time was spent in dancing, music, and competitions. Tha "lucky spot" dance was won by Miss M. Williams and Mi- C. Penny; the Monte Carlo by Miss I. TUllett and Mr L. Marriott, and the winner of the competition was Mr P. Percasky. Miss N. Billson acted as pianist. Among those present were Mrs ErTownley, Misses E. Williams, M. Currie, R. Cunningham, T. Tullett, M. Williams, M. Harris,. 0, Numvcek, N. Billsori, V. Boocock, 1). Smith, E. Billson, McCracken (3), M. Taylor, E. Orr, A. Orr, and E. Barnes, Messrs 11. Clark, L. Marriott, C. Penny, K. Watson, P. Percasky, E. Townley, Fantham (2), G. Billson, Broadhurst (2), J. Harris, G. Wright, R. Sneddon, and E. Hanson. Memorial Hall, Tho Memorial Hall Management Committee met on Thursday evening. Those present were Messrs R. Rickerby (chairA. Symo (secretary), E. H. AnC. Wood, W. G. Chapman, C. W. Moore) A. E. Purse, G. Radford, and J. Sturrock. Tho picture theatre proprietor notified the committee that he, was installing a talking-picture machine in the hall, and asked for alterations to be made to the operating box, and the wiring for the electric lights. It was decided to permit tho alterations, provided they complied with tho City's bylaws, and the regulations governing picture shows. ' The committee inspected the damage done by the storm, ahd decided to notify the City Council, and ask that steps be taken immediately to remedy the defects. Birthday Party. An enjoyable evening was given recently by Mr and Mrs Smallbon, Loftus street, Papanui, to celebrate the birthdays of their son and daughter, Hector and Rita. The following furnished items: Mr Johnson and Mr McConville. Bongs; Misses Rita Smallbon and Nancy Ploughs, recitations; Miss Joyce Fletcher, Messrs Johnson, Cyril Blackmore. and Hector Smallbon, musical quartet.' A competition was won by Miss Nancy Ploughs. Pound. Scheme. At tho conclusion of the . meeting of tho Waimairi School Committee, members sat as a Pound Scheme Committee. Mr A. Haynes presided. Mrs Merrin reported that she had interviewed Commissioner Rich, and he had promised that the Papanui Bov Scouts Troop would assist with the t collection of goods. It was decided to divide tho district into sixteen blocks, and the following were asked to canvass: Mesdames McCullough, Elliott, Ncilson, Hookham, Kruse, Tillman, Egglestone, Mann, Grubb, Collett, Englebrecht, Strang, and Jackson, .and Misses Hodgson (2), Claude (2), and McLeod (2), and Mr Wilkins. , ' Presentation. " The members and friends of the Papanui .Amateur Sports Club were entertained at a social in tho Papanui Buildings on Thursday evening. A pleasant time was spent with music, games, and dancing. During the evening Mr R. Rickerby, on behalf of the club, made a presentation of a case of pipes to Mr R. Hill, in recogniticn of his services as secretary to the club for the past three years. Other speakers were Messrs T. A. Grose, A. E. Purse, and J. Sturrock. Items were contributed by Mr Dale, (violin solo) and Master Ray Sturrock (Highland dance). Music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs Stamler and Dale. Progress League Social. On account of the wet night, the attendance at social of the Progress Loague 6n Wednesday was not so large -as usual. Messrs J. Scofleld and WVClarko, who were in charge, howover, kept the evening going, and a happy time was spent. . Songs were given by Miss A. Pohgelly. Mrs Si H. Co* played the accompaniments, and Mr Fred C.omyns the music for the dancing.
Social Evening. . The fortnightly social of Court Papanui Foresters was held in the Papanui Buildings on Monday evefiing. A card tournament occupied the early part of the evening, followed by a dance. The music was supplied by -Mrs C. Smith, extras being played by Mr A. V. Baker and Mr R. Claridge. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs Gilmour and Mr W. Timor. Mr A. Claridge acted as M.C. Tlic card winners were Mrs Neilson 1, Mrs Mnnro 2, Mr J. Hadley 1, Mr L. Cooper 2. Waimairi School Committee. At a meeting of the Waimairi School Committee on Wednesday, Mr A. Haynes presided. Others present were Mesdames Merrin (secretary), Neilson, and Sinith, and Messrs James, Claude, Drury, and C. Evans (treasurer). Mr Evans roported that on account of the increased attendance the incidental account had been increased by £ll. The report of the headmaster (Mr C. Wilkins) stated that the bridge over the creek at the Bryndwr end was repair. Mr Claude offered to repair the bridge. Mr Claude also offered to repair an • rn suitable for providing cocoa for the school children. The report of the dental nurse (Miss McCrostie) stated that there had been 89. attendances at the clinic. It was decided to apply to the River Trust for .firewood. The question of the levy on children for clinic services was left in the hands of Messrs Haynes and McLeod, and Mrs Smith.
