PIONEER SPORTS CI/ÜB. FIXTURES. June 27th —Club run to Ashburton. July 18th—Annual general meeting ol motor section. NOTES. To-morrow afternoon the Pioneer Sports Club will hold a club run to Ashburton, leaving the elub house at 2.30. They will be entertained at a smoke social during the evening by the loeal clufi. With floe weather there sho'uld be a bumper attendance, and the hosof the Ashburton Club being proverbial, an enjoyable evening is well assured. This will be the last fixture o£ the Pioneer Sports Club prior to the annual meeting of the motor section, which has been set down for Saturday, July 18 th. The football match against a team of Cheviot motor-cycle enthusiasts, held last week-end, proved-quite good, and will now no doubt be made an annual fixture. On arrival at Cheviot last Saturday the Pioneer Sports Club's team was met by the local executive, and warmly welcomed. The captain of the Cheviot team (Mr Val Osmond) said he hoped that the visit would give an impetus to the sport of motor-cycling in the district. He felt assured from what he had heard of the qualities of the members of the Pioneer Sports Club and from what he knew of the local team that the game would be played in strict accordance with its best traditions. Responding, Mr T. B. McCJleary (captain of the visitors) said that the prowess of the Cheviot team on the football field, as elsewhere, was well known and duly respected, and as a ttpnfc hi* tain had come m anacipap
tion of a strenuous battle. His elob appreciated very keenly the endeavours of the local rider# to make this, their initial visit, such that all would be anxious to repeat it at some future date. The visitors ware entertained at a . very successful social function, and during their visit were made the guests of the local team. The football match, played awheel the following afternoon, proved both spectacular and very fast from the bounce. McCleary, for the visitors, was soon to the foree, carrying the ball into his opponents' territory, when Cheviot, with a fine dash, returned the ball, and only by pure ill-luck missed scoring. A free-kick resulted when the visitors, making the most of an opportunity, soon had the locals in difficulty, Haden scoring first goal. In the second half the visitors, who possessed greater experience than their opponents, and were well mounted, soon had the local side in difficuties. McCleary got away from the field, and sent to Haden, who scored his second goal. The visitors continued to be aggressive until Burrows, receiving a pass from Ball got through to McCleary, who scored another point. Lew Evans came up with an excellent run, and scored an additional goal, the scores being: Pioneer Sports Club 4, Cheviot nil. The ground was on the greasy side, and spills were fairly frequent. Though they were of a spectacular character, none was serious. Cyril Hayward, as referee, acquitted himself with honours. The teams were:—Cheviot: Val Os- 1 mond (captain), M. Taylor, A. Goodman, P. TJpston, P. Murphy," and J. Luxton (emergency). Pioneer Sports dub: T. B. McCleary (captain), A. H. Haden, T. Ball, H. Burrows, Xi. E. Evans, and G. D. Bobson (emergency).
