POUND SCHEME.
MEETING AT SUMNER- ■ f •' PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS. For the purpose of making preliminary arrangementsfor the pound scheme at Sumner, a public meeting was held, in the"Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The; Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. W. Harris) presided over a small attendance, bad weather, conditions being responsible for a smaller gathering tfo" 1 was; anticipated. Mr Harris said that in Sumner the number of unemployed had steadily increased during. the past few weeks, and at present there were 91 men out of work. The president of the Sumner Burgesses Association (Mr Douglas Smith) also addressed the meeting. Major R. A. Row outlined the organisation of the scheme in the various suburbs and in the City. 1 It was decided to set up a committee of, all those present to. undertake the formation of the scheme. An executive committee was also elected -os follows: —The Deputy-Mayor (Mr Hi. W. Harris), Messrs Douglas Smith, G. A. Alexander, A. Holden, H. L. Wiggins, F. J. Glaekin, H. C. S. Jamieson, and Adjutant Fergusson, of the Salvation Army. A hearty, vote or thanks was accorded Major ;Row for his assistance in explaining the scheme. Later a meeting of the executive committee was held. Mr Douglas Smith was elected chairman and Mr G. A. Alexander Secretary. It was decided to open two receiving depots, one in Sumner and one in RedclifEs,. the former to be arranged
