WATER RATES.
TO THE SWTOB 01 TUB PRESS • Sir,—Will you allow me to add niy plaint to those who complain of the charge made by the City-Council I6r extra water. The size, of my section is '36 perches, and on it are. a sixroomed house, garage, out-house, aqd fowl run. The front is. laid down in; grass, the test is garden, I sometimes use the hose ot; the garden. 1 am entitled to 20 thousand gallons on . niy valuation and am'- billed ■ with 25s f6r 25 thousand. I appear .to have used 40 gallons per day. per head, for the year. I>oes the Health Department consider, that excessive for baths, flushing closets, cooking, and washing ? . My water rate is about 10 per cfent.. of my whole assessment, and io ..prob-
ably uniform throughout the City and produces, say, £30,000. On tile figures supplied to you by the Citv engineer, 1,246.357,500 gallons at a shilling per thousand gallons is worth £63,317 J'S 6d. The houses with meters pay the price of what they use. Where does the rest go toP As regai ds the price of water m Christchurch. it is excessive. In Dublin the price was 6d. It is now 4d. because the surrounding townships obiocted to pay 6d on the grounds that a sanitary authority. cannot make a profit. In Glasgow,. citizens are recommended to use the water, so as to flush the sewers. I see no reason why the price in Christchurch should not be reduced to sixpence.—Yours, etc., AVON SIDE.
