WOMEN AND GIRLS UNEMPLOYED.
A SERIOUS POSITION. APPEAL BY MAYOR. The urgency of the problem and the extent of the need for relief among unemployed women and girls in Christchurch are points stressed by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), in an appeal he has issued on behalf of the Women's Unemployment Committee. The state of affairs is characterised by him as "very serious." "It is imperative that immediate steps shall be taken to meet what is really a serious social problem arising from abnormal economic conditions," he states in the course of a letter to employers and organisations of workers. | 'As no provision is made for women in the State Unemployment Scheme, relief of their necessities is dependent on funds raised,by voluntary subscription. _ Some money has already been received by the committee and various steps have been taken to assistthe most needy cases, but the resources available up to the present are hopelessly inadequate to. deal with the situation. > ''lt is ■ felt ■ that there are many v. omen and gvrls in.steady employment who will glaalv contribute a email sum a week to assist those of their own sex irho are out of work. We earnestly request you to place. this matter before your employees or the members of your union, as a matter of urgency, in the hope that they will agree, voluntarily, to a small weekly levy." Contributions should be sent to the City Treasurer, marked "Women's Unemployment Committee."
