PAPANUI AMATEUR SPORTS CLUB.

Under the auspices of the Papanui Amateur Sports Club, a twegty-two milo road race was held at Harewood on Saturday afternoon. Tho course was round Bishop's, Sawyer's Arms, Waimakariri, and Harewood roads, a distance of approximately five and a half miles, The entry of 19 riders was tho smallest uince tho road racing season opened, tho bitterly gold and boisterous weather being responsible for the nonappearance of many of the riders. 13. \V-. Stevens, a brother of tho winner of J*st week's race, made his first appearance, and. being an unknown quantity, was put on the mid-way mark of SJmin. He proved to be a "dark horse,"' and, leaving his co-markers almost at the start of the race, lie went post the 3imin men when about threo miles of the journey had been covered. Against a head wind on tho Wuimakarin road, he overhauled the 4min men, and by the time the lap was completed ho was barely a minute and a half behind the traders, to whom be was conceding Bj,oiin. M. P. Pearl, who gained fastest time lass week, was the only scratch man who put in bq appearance, and, carrying out the rule preventing any rider starting off a mark by himself, H. C. Basher, H. J. Harper, and S. Weir, who were to start off Jmin, were put back in company with Pearl, Those riders were conceding 6mi« to -4. Hands, C McAlister, and b. Richards, Berry, and Giles was Slmin Usee The performances of Stevens and Poarl seemed to upset the co-operation of the various bunohes, and, together with the sharp wind, caused many retirements, Bar- > low, Lester* Lavoook, Richards, Basher, and .Wei?- pulliner out during the third lap. At the boll, there were qnly seven riders left, in the race. Stevens had forged ahead early in the lap and had trained « lead of 46seo on Hands, Baloh, Giles, and Dunlop. McAlister' followed 49eec later, with Pearl three-quarters of a minute behind. At thip stage Pearl's ridiner time was 46min EOsec, Stevens' 46min Sosec, and Giles' 46m in 2Csec. - Stevens crossed the line about 250 vards . ahead of Giles, who beat Dunlop by three lerrths for <ocond place, Pearl had trouble again with his chain about three miles from home.
