WHEAT AND OATS.

PROGRESS THRESHINGS. IMPROVED WHEAT YIELDS. The results of threshing , operations carried out during the period JanuaryApril, have been ascertained, by the Government Statistician from returns received up to May 19th. The figures show that 5,326,020 bushels of wheat and 1,921,248 bushels of oats have been threshed from harvested areas of these crops, the ascertained average yields per acre being 31.67 bushels for wheat and 42.17 bushels for oats. A table' is appended, showing for each land district the • quantities of wheat and oats threshed, and the'average yield per acre in each case: Wheat". Of the totals 1,248,743 busliuls were white oats, 210,189 bushels, Buns, 53,208 black, arid 409,108 Algerians.

• The "returns arc being well maintained, ibe average of 31.67 bushels of ~ wheat to the acre comparing with 31.20 busliels as at April 20tli. It is apparent that the final returns will be in excess of tho official cstimato early in the season, which set down the prospects at slightly over 27 bushels to the acre, or a total crop of 6h million bushels. Should tho average yield be maintained at the presont level—which, however, can scarcely bo expected for tho total acreage—it would mean a total crop of 7,700,000 bushels. North Island criticism is frequently levelled; at the failure ■ of . wheat-growers to respond to the, protection .afforded thorn; and instance the present year's early cstimato of tie crop (Cj 'mijiiou bushels) in support of tfic contention. Should the yield for the year finish up on tho present promise—or a crop of about 7i millionbushels—there will be sufficient wheat —with the carry-over from last season of three-quarters of a million bushels and a similar quantity imported in | yvheat and flour each .year-i—to incot all | necessities. "The corresponding figures | last season wore 5,981,843 bushels and i tho averago" yield' 31.14 bushel s. The, oats • yield per aero of 42.17 bushel a compares with 46.74 bushels at tho corresponding. period j in 1930, and the total- weight bushels as against, 2,354,147.
