VICE-REGAL RECEPTION.

The blustering winds of Thursday morning, which swept Auckland in the early hours, had calmed down considerably by the afternoon, but brilliant though tho sunshine was there was no warmth in it and the atmosphere was uncomfortably piercing, says the New Zealand "Herald." In delightful contrast were the rooms at Government House where their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe held a reception. Brightly burning fires offered an irresistible invitation, and, the warm soft colouring of the flowers which were everywhere to be seen added to their welcome. Great bowls of hydrangeas, the beautiful bronze gold of chrysanthemums, low bowls of carnations, and tall stands of guelder roses were more suggestive of summer than of winter. Their Excellencies received in the large reception room, Lady Bledisloe wearing an ensemble of • champagne georgette with a small close-fitting hat turned back from the face and caught with a diamante ornament. Lady Norali Jellicoe wore a frock of forest green crepe de chine with a loose cape effect at the back and small green hat, and Mrs A. C. Day was in an ensemble of black satin with black and white scarf and hat repeating the two colours. Sir John Hanham, Mr A. C. Day, and Lieutenant Elworthy assisted in the entertainment of the guests. Tea was served in the dining-room and in the ballroom, the tables having been arranged with chrysanthemums and hydrangeas. In the latter room the hanging baskets of fern were very picturesque against the white background of the walls. An orchestra played a number of delightful selections.

Godby, and Mrs Cecil Wood, and were then shown over the recently-erected Sir Henry Segrave Memorial Cottage, which provides accommodation for the night nurses at the liospital. The building of the cottage, picturesquely situated on the hill behind the main building, and commanding a fine view of the plains, was made possible by the gift of £179 5s lOd from the British Manufacturers' Association (Canterbury branch), being half tho profit of the Golden Arrow Motor Exhibition. The visitors said they were delighted that the gift had been devoted to such a useful purpose, and they expressed pleasure at the neatness and charm of the rooms with tlieii; furnishings in two shades of blue and their brass memorial tablet. After 'inspecting fho hospital, tho visitors wore entertained at tea in the nurses' dining-room.
