OBITUARY.
MR WIREMU TOREPE. Mr Wiremu Tojrepe, who at tho Arowhenua Maori Pa, Temuka, ■was born ■ at" Waitaki',- of . high Maori lineage, being a grandson erf thegreat chief Te Maiharoa. His mother, Kehi, was a daughter of T®- Maihaix>a, an.d hjs father a soli of Torepe and Tahau. His tribe was Ngati JHnirapi and Ngati Tuihaitara, and his iwi Ngaitahu and Ngati-Mamoe. He went to tho Temuka district from Waitaki when bo was a child. The district now called Tycho Flat was named after his- grandfather, whoso name was Taiko. This o|dman, now long sinc4 dead, was at.one*time head shepherd oh; the Rhodes estate, and out of gratitude, for bis shepherd's action, With the help- of a : very faithful dog, ; in preventing large' numbers ; ot sheep from strayingT throughthe Mackenzie Pass, Mr Rhodes named the locality "Taiko'a Flat." Down the years, however, this name was changed until it has assumed the present title. A photograph of the dog was taken by Mr Rhodes, and framed, and is now a treasured possession 6f the Rhodes family; Mr Torepe was well known through the Dominion, having travelled extensively; and the extent of- his popularity is well reflected .in the large number of expressions of sympathy which have been received, by his family. He married a daughter of Maata Kahu and Frank-Fowler, and had a family of two sons and one daughter. Of thefie; one son and the daughter are quite young; the other son, Samuel, Holds- the position 'of Assistant-Town Clerk at Now Brighton. ', At the -funeral at the Arowhenua Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon there were present Maoris - from Wairarapa and from all parts - of- the. @outh Island. • The service was conducted -by the Rev. H. se;ltemga, assisted by the o&aikawfc Miffe i Wesley, and H. Tcraki; and four Rfttana. nurses in full coatujne preceded, the cortege. MR NEIL MENZIES. One of the . early' settlers of Cheviot in the person Mr Neil Mencies, died at' his residence, North street, Timaru, i last Saturday evening. Arriving in New Zealand, as a lad, he was employed for a. number of years by the late ,Hon. W.
