Stokes, in proposing the toast of "The Mayor and Councillors," drew attention to the large number of scrub fires the brigade had attended during the year. If the by-law making ownera of sections dear them was rigidly enforced it would lessen this type of fire besides making a considerable saving in the running of the tire engine. The speaker said that during the'recent Council elections an impression had been given that the brigade was not in favour of a Fire Board for the district. With aU due respect to the Council, he knew the Brigade would prefer the 1 jurisdiction of such a Board. •• Replying to the toast, the Mayor said that a certain amount of unfair criticism had beett; levelled at the Brigade. Good work had been fione. all by voluntary service. In connexion with the scrub fires, the Council had taken a case to Court to test the validity of its bylaw making owners clear their sections of scrub.
