The Canterbury Club, with a reduced offering of over 4% per cent., has fallen well behind the Wellington Club, whose reducticn amounts to only 35 .1-3 per cent. DOMINION-BRED SIRES.

REASONS FOE DJBGfcINE. THE MUSKET FAMILY. (.SPJSCUM.Y WBimSH FOB. THE MWSB.) tßy c. L. Jokbs ] The Successes of Karapoti and Cricket Bat in good class races this soaso.. goem to hav6 revived interest in the doihgs of New Zealand-bred sires, but when the position is closely scrutinised the prospect ot a return to their earlier pre-eminence seems rather remote. There are several reasons why the use of Dominion-bred sires declined, and principal among them are probably: (1) Much of the best of the earlier blood was sold to Australian, English, and foreign buyers; (2) quicker and surer transport facilities allow for importations from England a,nd elsewhere; and (3) very few owners nowadays ejeist to keep their colts entire until tried out on the track and at the stud. . To take the reasons in the order given, the first is applicable alfUOPt only to the Musket line, for with the exception of Traducer blood there was little demand from gntsMa the AttW?! liq.ii colonies for anything else up till about 1900, And what a Joss it has been I Of Musket's best g<ms @»rbi»e , and Trenton Wo?g.*s& to gq to Austrjiiis and thenise tg England, W»4. Maxim found his way to, the United States, where Sir Modred, perhaps the best of Traducer's pons, also foijnd a home and made good as a sire. Traducer did not have quite so good an opportunity flB Musket, |or in his first few seasons at the gtud in Canterbury and Wanganui he got very few chances with thoroughbreds, and it has been stated that his eonsprtS included only about 65 otUd-WWW' 'O9 «*'• other hand Musket left several good winners in England w|jich did not' eqme out until after he was expatriated. They Wero a goqd advertisement for him, however, and in his seven seasons at the stud in Auckland, although he did not have a much greater number of mares than Traducer, he got most of the best that there were in the country at the time* Tfaducer's sire line aeoms to have ended with Advance, and Musket's sway has practically ended s<? far as home-bred sires are concerned, though it has been reintroduced by the importation of some of Spearmint's sons. What would have happened had Carbine, Trenton, Maxim, and Sir Modred stayed with us is governed to some extent by the operation of reason No. 3, but judging by the experience of | the countries of their adoption bpth lines might have been' just as vigprouq to-day as they were in the BQ?s and 90's of last century. Importations. With regard to impp?taUons, it is interesting to note that in past 28 years there have been more " horses i brought to New Zealand for stud pur- i poses than there had been in thq ajjfty odd years pj-qvippply, dating from 1840, when Figaro, the first, blood horse to i be introduced into New Zealand, was brought over from New South Wales. Aether and Biddlesworth were the first English Worses imported—by thg Hon. H. Petto i'n 1843--b*?t of those imported prior to 1000, Sotyt is the t>#ly pne really prominent to-day f anfl that almost solely through-general patpnr, the aire of Karapoti. Since 19(30 there have been a number of representatives of aapppssfi?l lines imported from Great -Britain and Australia* but hardly one of them has been responsible so far fpr the estg^ijthme?"* o * # successful' giro line here, although it is tpo early yet, to say tM nppe pf thjm will be. Had Mr Stead! lived and retained the son' of Martagon for his own stud there would prqfeably have been further raids on the richer stakes at Randwick, and, great as some of the previous ones had been, wit|i Martian's,progeny from the fine collection of mareg then at Ysldhurst, he might have eclipsed all. That Martian has failed to leave a high-Class sire from amongst his numerous' offspring is remarked oh iairly frequently. He was an outbred hPTse himself, and continued outbreeding: on the one hand and the use" of the' gelding knife on the other, are responsible. Quite likely he transmitted some of his breeding ppwprs t(i several of hi® spns, Jiut ability to sire is nqt ' disppriiible from superficial characteristics only, and too few of liig sons were t"6d, thus placiag a fair margin of odds against the chances of the best for the purpose being saved. ■ ■ ■' The atonyhurst Sltud. season what a great outcross lie should' provide for Ball Dress's main lines. , In Nightmarch'e pedigree there is a return to Bend Or and a further, strain of Bend Or's. sire, Doncaster, I though Donovan. This, with a further return to Bend Or through Mar-, tian, who is maternal grandaire' to both Ball Dress and Nightmarch, would build up a wonderful pedigree which, earned to the sixth remove, .would reveal six strains of Musket, four of St. Sijnon, three of Bend Or, and two each of Hampton, Macaroni, Springfield, and Apremont. A 1 further recomweßdatioji is that each line comes to the surface through on# of its most successful channels. The type of conformation usually transmitted by the Bend Or line differs from that of the Musket or St; Bimon If fee*,. ond this in itself—without any knowledge of the pedigree—would constitute an outcross from .the point of view of the modern student of heredity.
