NORTH CANTERBURY.
KAIKOURA. the annual meeting of the Kaikoura Suburban Hall Society was held ou May 22nd, Mr John Schroder presiding over a very large -attendance. The secretary read the balance-sheet, showing the receipts to have been £224 19s 4(1 and the expenditure £153 4s 3d, leaving a credit of £7l 15s Id. Assets wore shown at £7OB 10s 7d, being an excess of £425 10s 7d over liabilities (debentures £319, less refunds forleited £36). The balance-sheet was adopted.
The report said that the dances held during the year had brought in £GO Is •'d, and other social evenings £SB 2s, while the Hall Improvement Committee had secured £lO 12s 6d. Various improvements h&d been effected, and everything was in order. The report was adopted. A vote_ of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the Society's legal adviser, Mr S. J. Mogridge. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr J. Schroder (re*electod): vice-president, Mr C. Clemett; secretary, Mr R. Register; treasurer, Mr F. La\vson; auditor, Mr R. T. Pope; legal adviser, J. A. Scott; committee, Miss Chisnall, Mesdames R. Register, Poole, H. Gibson, E. Dabinette, I Messrs Y. Chapman, P. Poole, L. Grim- | wood, and A. W; Ball, j It was decided to pay off forty debentures, and the numbers were thereupon drawn. GREENPARK. There was a fair attendance at the liall Committee's long night social on Friday evening, the prizes being won by Misses Ina Stalker and Gladys Bennett, Messrs E. Greaves (Lincoln) and .r. Stalker. Aggregate prizes for the j past six nights were awarded to Mrs j ilopley (Lincoln) and Mr E. Watkins (given by Mr J. Stalker). Two Monte Carlo one-steps were won by Mr J. Clark and Mrs Bellwood (Toronto). Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Clark, extras being played by Miss Eileen Chapman, and Mr E. Stalker was M.C. LADBROOKS. The annual meeting of residents to elect the Hall Committoo for the ensuing year will be held this evening at 8 o'clock. All residents are asked to bo present. The Hall Committee held another very successful ball recently. Several novelty dances were introduced during the evening. B-ryson's Band supplied the musi,c, and extras were played by Mr Ray Ware. The unusually dry spell was broken on Thursday, when cold south-west weather, accompanied by rain and hail, set in. WOODEND. The Woodend Methodist Church held special services to celebrate its anniversary. the preacher in the'morning being the Rev. Rugby Pratt, of Christchurch, and in tho evening the Rev. S. Henderson, of Rangiora. Both services were well attended. At the morning service Miss Peacock, of Christchurch, sang a solo, and tho children of the Worshipping Children's League sang hymns. . At the evening service Mr H. Robertshaw rendered & solo. • Tho aimiversary wnd continued on Wednesday, when a tea was held in the Woodend Public Hall, after which the Kaiapoi Methodist Choir and orchestra gave a concert prograipme, the Rev. Mr Ford, of Woodend, occupying the chair. Both parts of the programme were opened by orchestral numbers, while the choir gave three concerted items. Songs were sung by Misses Thorne and Joyce. Messrs A. Blakeley, and A. Hirst, and recitations given by Mrs Stocking. Misses Roberts «hd Wllia-ms. The Misses Williams contributed a sketch, and the Misses Seeker a dance (Rainland). Mra Rinaldi played a violin solo, and Mr Mar-
tin a pianoforte solo. Afc tho conclusion of the programme. Mr Robertshaw proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, which was carried by acclamation. The sinK'nsr of the National Anthem terminated a very successful anniversary celebration. Mr A. Yaxley, who was injured at the Waikuku twineworks recently, died in the Public Hospital last week. The funeral, which was largely attended, was conducted by tho Rev. E. Chard, the pall-bearers beinr Mr Yaxley's four sons, Messrs Bert, Bob, Hector, and Ileg. Yaxley. DUNSANDEL. This Dunsandel Hockey Club's annual re-union was held on Thursday evening, when there was a largo attendance at the Dunsandel Town Hall, including visitors from Leoston and Christehurch. The function took tho form of a plain, fancy, and mask ball, arrangements for which were made under the supervision of Mr J. H. Skinner (president), and Miss L. McGeorge (secretary). Brysoa's orchestra provided the dance music, and. Mr K. W. Macpherson was M.C., assisted by Mr K. Johnston. A lucky spot waltz was won by Misa Hennessy and Mr Williams. Prizes for costumes were awarded as follows: —Best costumes.* Miss Clark ("Black Cat Cigarettes")) and Mr Bert Watson ("Sir Walter Raleigh"); most original, Miss Burt ("Old Mother Hubbard"), and Mr A. Howson ("Vegetable Vendor").
