Bv proclamation in the Gazette the middle lino of a further portion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, from Parnassus northwards, is defined. At the opening of the annual exhibition of tho Auckland Society of Arts the <j!overnor-€roneral, Lord Bledisloe, offered a silver medal annually for the picture which is deemed to be the most meritorious reproduction of New Zealand scenery. Lord Bledisloe also offered £lO as a prize in a contest for the best design for this medal, the competition not to be confined to Auckland. Both offers wore accepted . Lord Bledisloe declared that New Zealand scenery was of the most norfccfc variety to be found anywhere in the world. giving wonderful scope for artists both commercially and from the national viewpoint.
