TIMAEU. THE GENERAL ELECTION. At a meeting of the Reform Party last evening, Mr Herbert N. Armstrong was selected to contest tho Timaru seat at the General Election. The only other candidate definitely announced is Mr Clyde Carr (Labour), the sitting member. On the United side, those mentioned include Messrs Andrew Kennedy, alter Raymond, Herbert Hall, and AY illiam Angland (all residents oi the Borough). Unemployment Levy. Tho lirst prosecutions in Timaru i'or failure to pay the December and March instalments of tbe Unemployment levy were heard by Mr C. 15. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when Albert H. de Joux, G. P. Doyle, and E. T. Lylo were each fined £2 and costs. The Labour Department Officer, Mr G. McKessar, conducted tho prosecutions. In imposing the fines the Magistrate remarked there had been prosecutions in various parts of New Zealand, and he considered the Department was doing the right thing in compelling thoso who evaded their responsibility to pay in fairness to those who met their, obligations.

The Licensing Act. The licensee of the Saltwater Creelc Hotil, Matthew Henry Biehards, and his son, Spence Joseph Biehards, the barman, were charged in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr "On Walker, S.M., Aviih breaches of the Licensing Act. The Magistrate reserved hi 3 decision. 'The charges against the licensee were of opening ;the premises for the saie of liquor and selling' after hours, and the barman was charged with supplying liquor to a person under 21, and supplying after hours. < Assault Alleged. Neighbouring Washdyke families accused one another of assault in a suit heard by Mr C. It. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A -widow, Ellen Woodham, charged Chas. Edwin Hooper, a factory manager, with assaulting her on April 29th. Counter-charges were made by Hooper against Mrs Woodham, accusing her of assaulting him. and also Coira Hooper. Mr Mcßaie represented Mrs Woodham, and Mr Inglis appeared for Hooper. On the charge of assault made by Hooper against Mrs Woodham, the Magistrate found that she had committed the assault when excited. She was convicted and ordered to come up if called upon. The other case is proceeding.

' - :^IMATE. At the first meeting of the recentlyelected Waimate Borough Council there .vere present the Mayor (Mr G. Dash), Crs. T. Twomey, A. W. Good, M. T. Hay, S; I. Fitch, R. H. White, G. F. Richardson, C, T. Hodges,. W. G. Paul, A; =J. Boskjns. The Inspector for Health - reported' four cases of scarlet fever in the borough during April. Tlio South Canterbury Hospital Board forwarded statement ol : levies showing a reduction of ' £6i for the Waimato Borough on the previous year. 'Hie estimates were also iorwarded, Cr. Richardson moved: "That this Council desires to place on record its appreciation of thn South Canterbury Hospital Board in its action, whereby ■ the levies on the local bodies have been substantially reduced." Cr.' Hoskins seconded, and the motiop was carried. Regarding the proposed new intake for the borough water supply, it was to hold a special meeting, on May 26th for tho • purpose of l'ulty discussing the matter. Mr C, M, Howe applied for permission to trap opossums ,in Kelcy's Bush. The request'was refused. Committees Appointed. The Mayor said there was no call for children to be near the cattle ' stops, and Cr. Fitch stated the Council was only, liable if there, was. a .hidden danger, which could_ not be observed by' anyone taking ordinary care. Estimates for tho Year, Tentative estimates for tho current financial year', were considered, . A total expenditure of £7986 16s 7d was estimated. It was mentioned that there was included £3OO for assisting in unemployed relief work. Cr. J. T. Hay commented that there was. nothing in tho estimates for kerbins. . .

The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) said the matter was entirely in the hands of the Council.

Cr. Hodges made critical reference 'to the amount of £225 for putting: a road up i#" the new intake site. ' The Mayor said he did not think the Council should criticiso what had been done by its predecessors. '.ln regard to estim>-toc} revenue, was stated that the Government subsidy set down at £187:10s might he •lost altogether, while estimate for 'water receipts was £SO less than last Tear. The Mayor commented that tho Council, would not have money to play with this year. ■■ ■ . , The estimates were adopted.

PAREORA. ■ Alter a very busy time at tho local freezing works, stock-has begun. to alack en off. Consequently quito a number of men liave been put off. During tho holidays tho uewlyformecl troop of Guides under their captain, Mrs Nelson, have put.in some useful work to qualify for their-second-class badges. ' ' Two afternoons', were spent tracking and. the outings proved most beneficial and eujoyablo. 1 On Saturday last the sudden death of Mr T. Sands occurred. Mr Sands was a very old and respected resident of tho district, being 88 years of age. He successfully followed farming pursuits. The funeral took place on Monday last, when a large number of friends gathered to pav their last respects. The Rev. Mr Pryor conducted tho burial service. -

Mr Sands is survived by ono daughter, Mrs Kernohan (Temuka), and ono son, Mr W. G. Sands (Pareora), and ten grandchildren.

FAIRLIE. On Tuesday evening the Parish liall was well filled, the occasion being a cai-d and social evening, arranged by the FairliG Bowling Club. During tho evening Mr J. C'askey, president of the bowling club, presented tho various cups won by members of the club during tho past, season. The winners of the prizes for the card match were Miss D. Doyle and Mr Cadenhead. Hidden number: Mrs Larnder and Mr S Page. Fairlie and district lia-vo "been very fortunate in the very fine weather experienced to date this season. Haiti frosts, which are usually much in evidence at this time of the year, havo' been escaped, and nor'-west conditions have prevailed during the past week. Farmers have taken full advantage of tho fine weather and work has been pushed on. There, is a good supply of winter feed; and stock, which are in good condition, should como through the winter well.

ARUNDEL. A large crowd assembled at th© Howard Hall, Arundel, on the occasion of the fortnightly social. The prizes were won by Miss B. Harris and Mr Recs-. and the consolation prizes were awarded to Miss M. Charles and Mr P. Lysaght. ' Music was supplied by Mrs Tait and Messrs Popplewell and Quinlin, and the duties of M.C. were carried out bv Mr Hewitt. The following.,'tircre the scores-at the weekly shoot of the Orari Bridge Men's Miniature Rifle Club-W. South 76, W.'Crotty 79, J. Scully 76, W. Scully 77, C. McDonald 79, A. South 78, N. The following were the best scores at tbe weekly shoot of the Orari Bridge Ladies' Club: —Mrs Pratt 76, Miss McLean 77, Miss Ford 77, Miss C. Rule 73, and Miss J. Rule 71.
