WEDDINGS.

BUTCHER—O'BRIEN. At the Catholic Cathedral yesterday morning, the marriage was celebrated of Madeleine Morey, only daughter o2 Mr and Mrs J. O'Brien, Christchureh, and Alfred Benfield, only son of Mr and Mra W. E. Butcher, Wright's Bush, Southland. The Sanctuary was decorated ! with autumn flowers : and foliage by the bride's friends, and the Rev. Father McMonagle, Administrator, performed tho ceremony, and also celebrated Nuptial Mass. Miss Kathleen O'Connor was organist, and during Mass & solo "Ave Maria" was sung by Mr W. B. Brittenden. The bride wore a lovely long r sleeved frock of ivory satin, made with a tight bodice and V-shaped neckline, finished with a quaint Medici collar, while the ankle-length skirt was fully flared. Her tulle veil, worn off the forehead was caught with a spray of orange blossom at the back of the head, and her shower, bouquet was of vivid . scarlet begonias. Miss Doreen Brittenden, who acted as bridesmaid, wore a long-sleeved, j ankle-length frock of apricot taffeta, j painted with flowers in nasturtium shad- ! ings, and trimmed with finely pleated ruchings and a large bow at the back. Her shoes and her large felt hat, trimmed with panne velvet, matched the flowers in her frock, and she carried a bouquet of apricot roses and pink begonias. Mr J. O'Brien gave his daughter away and Mr J. C. Dobbs was best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Winter Garden, where the guests were received by the bride's mother, and by Mrs A. Butcher, the bridegroom's grandmother. Mrs O'Brien wore a smart black georgette frock with inset flares of black lace, and a finely pleated beige georgette* vestee, a black silk maroeain coat, and black hat. She carried a bouquet of autumn flowers. Mrs Butcher wore a black crepe de chine frock patterned in a floral design, a black silk coat trimmed with light fur, and a black felt hat. Her bouquet was of red roses. When Mr and Mrs A. B. Butcher left on their wedding tour, the latter was wearing a wine ring velvet frock, with self-coloured spots and v.estee of finely tucked cream mariette. Her felt hat to match was trimmed with velvet and she carried a musquash fur coat. MACDONALD—HELD. (special to the press.) * . OAMARU, April 29. At St. Luke's Church, Oamaru, the wedding was celebrated to-day of Betty Alfreda Dorothy Reid, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. P. Reid, Oamaru, and Dr. Allan Augustus Macdonald, youngest son .of Mrs A. V. Macdonald and the. lato Mr A. V. Mticdonald, of Auckland. The officiating clergyman was the Ven. Archdeacon Russell, and Mr F. C. Burry was the organist. The bride was escorted by her father, who gave her away, and the church was decorated with hydrangeas and autumn leaves. j The bride's gown was of ivory souple satin, made in Victorian style, with train of georgette and silver. She wore a silver tissue cap back from the face and a veil which fell from a coronet. Her bouquet was of beautiful hothouse flowers. The bridesmaids, Misses Noeleen lieid and Betty Sutton, wore frocks of cream souple satin made on similar

lines to the bride's gown,, with little coatees of theeame material, and they wore silver tinsel caps andi red shoes. Th«y carried sheaves of. rod tulips.-The page boys were Masters Didk and ja©k Scott, who wore King Edward pageboy suits. , ■ . The bridegroom was attended. by Dr. R. E. Austin as best man,: and Dr. E. E. Butler as groomsman. ; After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Queen's Hotel, the reception room being prettily , decorated with' hydrangeas _ and autumn leaves. Mrs Reid, the bride's mother, received the guests, wearing a black lace frpek and - coatee, and a large black picture hat and ermine stole. - Her bouquet was of red roses. When the bride and bridegroom left later for their wedding tour, the bride was wearing a brown* and fawn French model frock, brown'hat,', and fur coat. When there is the first showing of a new motion picture, or some other important event, in Hollywood, the sky is illuminated for miles around by huge searchlights. The lamps used for the display represent more than five and one-half billion candle-power, and include the latest and most efficient types of lights.
