DOMESTIC SERVANTS.
j FREE PASSAGES SAID TO BE STILL OFFERING.. '' If this is correct it' is a crime. It is bringing women to New Zealand under false pretences," said Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P., to a representative of The PfiEss yesterday. Mr Armstrong stated that at the meeting held by Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., on Tuesday evening, he (Mr Armstrong) had mentioned that it was reported that the Government was still paying assisted passages for domestic servants coming to New Zealand. He had seen a statement in the "Stirling Observer," Scotland—a statement which he had not in his possession at the time. It was as follows:—• "The Government of New Zealffhd, in order to meet the continued demand for .thoroughly domesticated young women for New Zealand households, offer free •passages froin the port of embarkation to' destinations in New Zealand, together with £2 gratuity towards out-of-pocket expenses. Approved applicants for New Zealand proceed under care of a matron, and, upon arrival in New Zealand, are'sent by the emigration authorities, who arrange suitable domestic situations. Such passages are arranged "by the large and well-equipped steamers of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. and the New Zealand Shipping Co. " All interested in the above scheme should call and. interview Miss Hanlon, the New Zealand Government representative, who will be at the office of Eneas H. Mackay,. shipping and tourist agent, 44 Craigs, Stirling, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 19th, for the purpose of interviewing applicants for free passages to New Zealand as qualified domestic servants.
