COUNTERFEIT NOTES.
OVER 80 IN POSSESSION OF POLICE. (i'BESS ASSOCIATION TBUSGBAM.) . AUCKLAND, April 29. Over SO counterfeit Bank of New South Wales £ 1 potes have been handed in at the detective office to date, and it is believed many are still in private hands. Harry Torpy, aged 46, described as a native of New South Wales, and a showman by occupation, who was arrested yesterday, appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this .morning charged with uttering a forged note on April 24th. "This man was associated with ono of the other men already in custody, and lie has been identified as having passed a note," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, who obtained a remand. Bail was refused. The actual note from which it is believed the counterfeits were made has reached the bank and has been handed to tho police. It is not certain that the counterfeits were made in Auckland as was at first believed. The notes circulated in Wellington are different, the back of the note being upside down.
