>- AUCTIONS. 11. MATSON AND CO. HII.VKOS AND CO. REPORT ON • A DDJNC-TON MARKET AS FOLLOWS:— STOUE LAMBS. H. 11 AT,SON ami (.'O. report tin: entry .in itiis sfrtiim to comprise 402 G. The Milo opened !■. ;t very .small attendance which iinreused as :in> salo progr« ssod. The greater portion of :hu entry were backward in condition. A good number o£ the consignments were suffering i rum nasal troubles, and this retarded prices •in numerous instances. Reviewing the sale as .■ v. hole we nro of the opinion that the best of tlio fin-' wools and thrcc-quarterbred ewe jMnbs .-.old up to last week's rates. The averyi". quality ewe lambs sold irregularly at • rriainly lower rates than the previous week. As regards the portion of the entry that . I'lild lit! quoted as rapo lambs, only one consignment in our opinion realised the previous week's rates, and this sold at 'Js 7d, being tine-woolled wether lambs. The balance of :lie entry, including small consignments and '■ai-kward consignments, and also culls, could "iilv bo disposed of at a shade lower than last ■ eek'.s values. The best jiriro for tlio day was for lini'-woolled ewe lambs at l is I'd, and tJie best price for long wools was 12s Od. . 11. Some of the sales were as follows: 32'J halfbred wethers, .-ouud-niouth, JOs, 177 halfbred wethers si-K :-ml eight-tooths, lux tid. 130 four and sixio.irli wethers, ex North Canterbury, 12s Id. Considering a lot of the.*; wethers were la to shorn and rough shorn, a lot of them were smoko begrimci' through rail travel, a large percentage wcro .showing the cross of the Roranc.v. Undoubtedly this section can have no complaints at the prices that were paid for them to-day. EWES—'This section, comprising 51540 .liri'li, were mostly small lots. The highest ;'ric'.*s obtained were as follows: —120 Romney two-tootli ewes 17s 4d, 84 halfbred twotnotli ewes 14s, 87 Lincoln merino halfbred mfCH, two-tooths, 14s (id, 25 Romney cwts, two-tooths, 13s Od, 02 ditto lis Od, 30 ihrie-quartcrbred four-tooth ewes 14s Ud, 110 halfbred foitr-tooth ewes 12s. 11. MATSON aud CO. quote tile following basis of prices: Extra good ewes from 15s to 17s 4d, medium ewes 9s to lis Od, light and uncertuin grades Os to 8s Od, others from 3s scl to 5$ Od. We have already referred to the quantity of the sheep that camo from long range localities, and the miscellaneous catalogue did not represent a Canterbury standard. With the heavy killings of thi» year's lamb?, the shortage of ewes that was in evidence at tlio various fairs this season. we can only warn the flock masters to retain good portion of their ewe lambs, and not their culls, or wo i't New Zealand wilt be hard put to it in tho near future to maintain our exports. Many of tho consignments, whil* attractive, when handled proved to be ■dipping in condition. Big, heavy wethers and big, heavy _phecp ot all grades for the most part could only be realised at lower values. Medium bandy light-weight sheep did not jsuffer so much, but both wethers und ewes wero on it lower basis. The quality of the entry -was mixed both as regards wethers and uwes, and provided ample opportunity for any purchaser to buy any grade at lower prices than last -week. Wethers especially appeared to bo cheap when compared with the prices that were being realised in the stor© sheep department. In our opinion an average drop for all grades in the fat sheep would be Is Od per head. Values were as follows:—Extra priino heavy wethers to 17s lOd, prime hcavy wetbers 14s to 10s, medium lis Od to 13s tid, second quality Ws to lis, others 7s 6d to Hi Gd; extra prime ewes to 14s 10d, prime do. MATSON and CO. report the yarding ot fat lambs comprised 4900. Tho quality of the yarding wwi mixed, but theTß were some especially good lino* forward. Bidding from the start o! the sale was rather easier than last week; and a slight decline in vlaues was apparent early. The sale continued erratic throughout, especially for secondary lambs, where the decline was most noticeable. Freezing buyers no doubt drawing in their limits on account of the lower prices for wool. The top price for tlio sale was 20s 4d. M. MAT6ON and CO. quoto the following range of values:—Extra prime lambs to 20s 4d, prime 15s 3d to 17s, medium 14s to ISs, light lis 3d to IBs fid, store lambs 9* (id to 10s (Id. JI. Tho percentage of steer beef was larger than usual, and speaking of the quality of the cattle to hand,, we can only describe tho same as mixed. West Coast consignors were represented by six or seven trucks, aud tht balance were forwarded by local graziers and fatteners. A noticeable feature at to-day's saW was that prime c#ttlo did not suffcf to the same extent as the unfinished and plain sorts. The latter class were hard to quit. , H.
