Henry Thomas Harvey, motor mechanic, of Ashburton, gave evidence that on Sunday, March 22nd, at about 2,15 p.m., he was on the main road at Governor's Bay. He heard the noise oi a car coming down the hill with gears j grinding badly. He noticed that the car bore a demonstration number. The car ran off the road and crashed into a pole. Witness went to the car to render assistance. Blackmore, who was in the driver's seat, asked witness to help him start the car again, but witness told him that it v/as impossible, as the car was smashed. Blackmore said the steering-gear had gone on hiin. and that the Timlcen bearing had seized. Witness examined the steering column and found nothing wrong with it. There was no Timken bearing in a steering-box. Sergeant Dunlop: What was defendant's condition? —He was hopelessly drunk and smelled strongly of liquor. Continuing, witness said he reported the accident to the I.yttelton police, and took two constables to Governors Bay. After they arrived, at the hotel he saw Blackmore leave the hotel by the back door. Mr Burns: Defendant was sober enough to discuss the parts of the car? —Xo. But you have given evidence that h<? did discuss the parts of the car? —Yes. but it was all rot he was talking. From the fact that you could Emell liquor in his breath and that you could not agree with his explanation about the steering, you deduce that defendant was drunk? —Yes, ond by his actions. Defendant eaid he had previously sold a car to a client in Rapaki and drove over with the client to Kapaki on the Sunday morning. He left Rapaki at about 1.20, and had luncheon at the Ocean View Hotel. He had no liquor except a squash and soda. On leaving the hotel he put the car into top gear and started down tho grade in top. Tlicro was no changing of gears. The steering-gear jammed and j the car crashed into the pole. The I steering-gear had previously been giving trouble, ,and he was taking the car back fop adjustments. Clarence William McDonald, motor-: mechanic said he took down the steer- I ing-gear of the car on tho day following. He found a broken ball-bearing, which had got into the oil-feed hole, and may havo caused the steering to j^mb. Evidence was given by George Columbus, license of the Ocean View Hotel, and Constance Columbus, waitress, that Blackmore had not been served witr. liquor nt the hotel. The Magistrate said ho was satisfied that Blackmore was intoxicated while in charge of the car. Defendant would be convicted and fined £2O, with .costs. Tho annual meeting of parishioners of St. Saviour's Church, West Lyttelton, was held in the Sunday School room last evening. The vicar, the Bev. C. W. I. Maclaverty, presided over a fanattendance. The churchwardens' report stated that the financial position ot the parish was satisfactory. The total receipts constituted a record for the parish. Extraordinary expenditure during the year included the cost of £B7 14s 9d, on the renovation of the vicarage, and £33 12s, half the cost of repairing the organ. The wardens thanked members of the Girls' Friendly Society, the Ladies' Guild, Social Committee, and all parishioners for their generous help at the fairs, socials, and jumble sales held during the year. Owing to the financial depression it was recognised that the coming year might be a difficult one for many of the parishioners, but with the same co-operation and loyalty to the Church as had been shown in the past year, they were-confident that St. Saviour's would come through the year safely. The vicar congratulated the parishioners on the past year's work. The record receipts showed that all had worked hard during the year. He particularly wished . to thank members of the choir.
