MR ARNOLD BENNETT.

LONDON, March 27. . The death is announced of Mr Arnold Bennett, .novelist. [Born at North Staffordshire in 1867, Enoch Arnold Bennett' was educated at Newcastle - Middle School. He entered the legal profession, but abandoned it for journalism, beginning in 1808 as assistant-editor of "Woman." Three years later he was appointed editor of the same, journal.- In 1900 he resigned in-order to'devote all-his time and talent to literature. Success was slow,* but steady at first, and then became rapid -and ample, several of hiS" -novels giving him distinction as a thinker and lucid writer. -He was liked for many reasons, but probably he won the greatest . and most enduring appreciation for his novels about lire in the 'Five Towns. His first triumph," however, published in 1906, was "The Old Wives' Tale." Othei tales which -will, continue' to attract and hold readers ■ were, his' "Clayhanger," "Hilda Lessways," "The Matador of the Five Towns, ' "Riceyman Steps," and "Lord Raingo." mr \ Bennett also gaihed a reputation As a playwright. He was a student of human life, and could make some of his best characters live, although' their philosophy on occasions was not very deep. It is not conventional to say that his death is a loss to English .literature.]
