NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

TIDES. It will be high tide at 10.39 a.m. and 11.15 p.m. on the beach to-day, and 11.23 a.m. and 11.59 p.m. in the river. To-morrow: 11.57 a.m. and 12.0 p.m. on the beach and 12.41 p.m. and 12.44 a.m. on the river. Bathing. Although there has been a noticeable falling off in the number of bathers, the fine weather during the earlier part of the week persuaded a number of people to take th'eir last surf bathe of the season, j Contrary to expectation, the water was warm, the absence of strong easterly winds making bathing conditions exI cellent. Fishing. Although the New Brighton Pier has its regular quota of fishermen throughout the year, it is not often that fish of exceptional size and quality are caught. Tuesday last was a profitable day for one fisherman, whose haul included a skate weighing nearly twenty pounds. Other fish caught include a number of large eels. Fishing at the Spit, South Brighton, has become more popular recently, the catches there, according to report, being very satisfactory. Association Football. The New Brighton Association Football Club will open its soason this afternoon, with a friendly match against members of the crew of H.M.S. Veronica. The match will be played on the Club's ground in the Rawhiti Domain. A team will be choseu from tho following players: —-M. Mitchell, S. Cawtheray, E. Stains, W. Waddell, A. Porter, C. Whitaker, P. Allen, J. Cockle, F. Smith, Lumber, T. Walls R. Sharr, P. Knight, A.- Cope, J. Allen, and A. Gordan. The Club will be strengthened by the addition of a number of new players this year, and it is hoped to be able *o enter four teams in the Canterbury Football Association's competitions. Women's Hockey. At the annual meeting of the New Brighton Ladies' Hockey Club, it was decided to rename the Club the Rawhiti Ladies' Hockey Club. There was a good attendance of members at the meeting which was presided over by Mr H. Throp. Bowling. The-final of tho Williams Shield competition conducted by the New Brighton Bowling Club resulted as follows: — Pearson, Chivers, Smith, and Pattrick (s) beat Howard, Ardern, Chapman, and Drake (s). The victory was a decisive one, tho winning rink leading all the way. On Wednesday afternoon the Club played a friendly match with Edgeware at Edgeware, the homo side winning comfortably. ' The second of a series of whist evenings was held in the Oasis Hall on« Tuesday, when prizes were won by Mesdames Queree and Carmalt, and Messrs A. Watson and- H. Beardsley. To-day's games are friendly matches with Canterbury,, two rinks at home and two away. Cadets Old Boys' Association.. The committee of the Cadets Old Boys' Association met in the Pier Hall on Wednesday, the president (Captain A. P. Hopkins, V.D.) occupying tho chair. At the request of several of the patrons pf the Association's first annual j dance, it was decided to hold another j dance on-similar liheß at 'an early date in the Masonic Hall. The arrangements are to be, left in the hands of the Entertainment Sub-Committee and the secretary, Sergeant Marriott. The Band instruments .were reported to hand, and it was decided to begin ■practices at once, and- also to .call * the members together for a "March Out.'?' Two nominations for membership Wore • received and'dealt with. It was agreed that the question of a site for the annual picnic should bo dealt with at the general meeting, to be held on Wednesday, April Bth. New Brighton Surf Club. The New Brighton Surf Club has had a successful season this year,. having won, in the inter-club events, the Boulten Cuf>, Sumner Cup, Black and White Cup, Benson Shield, and the North Beach Gala Cup. Club competitions were finished last Saturday, with the boys' event for the Sir Henry Wigram Rpse Bowl, seven teams competing. The season has been notable for the large number of promising swimmers taking part in surf events. The painting of the club's pavilion, which is being done by two club members, is nearly completed. -Tenni& /' The tennis toumanment, which was held by the New Brighton Club last Saturday in aid of the Earthquake Fund, realised £1 17s. Mixed doubles were played, the winners being Miss O. Curtis and Mr R. Hurrell. A number of members from the South Brighton Club took parff. . Golf. The Rawhiti Club and the Municipal Golf Links members are holding a combined, opening day to-day. A mixed foursome over eleven holes will be played and will be open to visitors. Oh Sunday atfernoon, the Rawhiti Club is. holding driving, approaching, and putting competitions for men. "Soutih Brighton Surf Club. The South Brighton Surf Club is organising a grand carnival on the beach for Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. The public will be assured of two days' enjoyment and a special carnival dance will be held pn both evenings. On Wednesday evening the club held its weekly card evening, which is still very popular. The prize-winners were: —Mesdames H.,Robinson, and Larcombe, and Messrs Morton and H. Robinson. Scouts. At the last committee meeting of the New Brighton Boy Scouts, the Rev. M. Feist was appointed Scoutmaster. Mr Bishop commented on the good work done by the boys at the camp at Grey river. . * . Group Scoutmaster March reported that, because of pressure of work, he 'was unable to continue with the basketwork. Mr Napper, however, offered to carry f»n with this. The. following sub-committees were appointed:— Training—Scoutmaster March, Messrs Napper, Bishop, Underhay, J. Gptt, and Stanford. Finance—Mesdames Bellamy and Napper, and Messrs Webb, Turner, ' Branch, and Stanford.

Mew Brighton Band. The weekly social conducted by the New Brighton Municipal Band was held in the bandroom on Wednesday last, a very' enjoyable evening being spent by the large number of supporters who were present. Prizes for games were awarded to the following: —Mesdames Phillpott, Yarrall, and Stevens, Messrs Perrin, Bennie, and Phillpott. The next social will be held in the bandroom on Wednesday evening next.. The band will play a popular on the New Brighton Rotunda to-morrow afternoon. St. Faith's Church. At the conclusion of the Lenten services in St. Faith's Church, the parishioners met the Rev. C. A. Perry in the Parish Hall, to express their appreciation of his work. Miniature Rifles. The opening of the New Brighton Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club will take place on the range at 8 o'clock this evening.. The opening ceremony will be performed by the Mayoress (Mrs J. H. Shaw), who will fire the first shot. General. The Mayor .(Mr J. H. Shaw) has received the sum of £5, being the proceeds of the concert organised by Mrs Betty Sneesby at North Beach in aid of the Earthquake Belief Fund. The Unemployment Committee set' up by the New Brighton Borough Council has prepared an extensive schedule of work for men working under the No. 5 Scheme. This includes the formation of a number of footpaths in the borough and will be put in hand as soon as possible. Plunket Card Evening. The winners at the last card evening held by the Plunket Society were Mr Flavel and Mrs E. Wyatt. Personal. Guests at the New Brighton Cafe include Mr W. O'Neil (Christchurch), Mrs Boot (Ashburton), and Mr and Mrs White (Dunedin). Farowell to Minister. A large crowd of people assembled in tho Methodist Sunday School Boom on Thursday evening, to say good-bye to tho Rev. and Mrs 0. S Pearn, who are leaving next week for Invercargill. Tho function took the form of a social evening, the Rev. A. N. Scotter (former president of the Methodist Conference) presiding. Mr Scotter paid tribute to the good qualities of Mr and and Mrs Pearn. Other speakers were:—The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw), Rev. M. Feist (Presbyterian Church, New Brighton), the Rev. Wallis, the. Bev. T. M. Curnow (Church of England, New Brighton), the Rev. F. Greenwood (Linwood Methodist -Church), .Mr A. Holden (Bible Class Union of New Zealand), Mr A. E. Lawry (representing the Methodist Sunday School and Bible Classes). Mr J. Buxton, senior ' steward of the church, on behalf of' the congregation, presented the minister with a Westminster chiming clock, and on behalf of the women of the congregation, Mrs Hall presented Mrs Pearn with a Kaiapoi travelling rug. l>uring the evening, which concluded with a supper served' by the women, musical and other items were contributed by Mrs G. Cooke (Cashmere), Mrs. 11. Whitwortb, Misses IS.. Langle.v and E. Spedding, and the senior and juvenile choirs. Miss L. Spedding and Mr G. The work done by the men employed under the No. 5 Scheme has made a wonderful improvement in the appearance of the footpaths and sides of the streets. Twenty men are now engaged on the proposed Sports Ground at the back of the North Beach School. The! •turf is being removed, the sand levelled, and the turf then replaced, wheelbarrows and planks being used for the removal of the sand. General approval is expressed of the way the men are working. \ - Inter-Borough Sports. ■ Stewart Freeborn and Dorothy Roud have been selected to represent North Bc&ch at the school section of the interborough sports. . . Personal. Miss Grace Burns, of Snowdon road, Fendalton, has been staying with Miss Irene Leaver, of Osborne terrace, North Beach. . : • Mrs H. Jones, of Hastings, is visiting her sister, Mrs W. E. Leverott," oi Bpwhill road, North Beach. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, of Osborne terrace, has returned from the North Island after attending the .district meeting of the 1.0. R. at "JVanganui, and visiting relatives at Feilding. Life Saving. , The final competition for the North Beach Gala trophies, the Primary. School boys.' resuscitation/ was held at the Tepid Baths last evening, and attracted nine competitors. The : results were: S. Bcsley (New Brighton School) 1, with G. Horwell (New Brighton) and G. Ansley (New Brighton) 2, ,equal. Also competing were: R. Watpon, K. Sorrell, P. Cocks, L. Franklin, W. Dqdge, and Ivan Craw. Tho judges were Messrs W. 11. Benson , D. V. Wilson, and R. Pcarce. Mr Benson, in presenting the cup to S. Besley, congratulated the boys on tho high standard pf the work done, and said that there, had not been more than two points difference between tho first and. last boy,' so that the judges had had a very difficult task.
