"AT HOME." The president, Mr Alfred Merton, and council of the New Zealand Society of Professional Teachers of Music (Canterbury Division) held a delightful re- : ception at Jellicoe Hall last evening, when the honoured guests were the : members of the music teaching profession, who are attending the conference at present being held in Christchurch. 1 The hall was effectively decorated with hydrangeas, hollyhocks, and maples, and comfortably arranged as a ' drawing-room, the small tables, on ■which supper was served, being bright with sweet peas and antirrhinums/ , There was not a vacant seat in the room. Madame Gower-Burns, Miss Marian Woodhouse, Miss Aileen Warren, and Miss Betty Hannam —members of ' the council —with Mr Merton, received the guests. Madame Gower-Burns wore a .black velvet frock with corsage and narrow skirt panels studded with dia- , mente, and a large bucklo of "brilliants at the waist. Miss Woodhouse wore a frock of black spotted net mounted on black satin, and brightened with a shoulder posy of scarlet flowers. Miss Warren's frock of black georgette had the bodice lightly embroidered with ; gold, and the slcirt panelled with gold lacc. Miss Betty Hannam wore a green faconne frock, embossed in ambor panne velvet. Mr A. J. Merton, in welcoming the guests on behalf of tho Canterbury Division of the Society, said that now that the Registration Bill was passed teachers should do their best to qualify themselves. An excellent musical programme was provided the entertainment of the large gathering. Mr E. C. Zimmerman and Mr Bernard Barker, with Miss Aileen Warren as accompanist, played Bach's Concerto, for Two Violins; Madame Gower-Burns , sang "L'Enfant Prodiguc," from "Recit et Air do Lia" (Debussy), and "Sing, Sweet Bird"; Mr W. H. Dixon Bang "Speak, Music" (Edward Elgar), and "Roses in December" ("Woodbino Willy"). Mr Barry Coney contributed a modern song, "I Shall Go Softly All My Years," and as an encore gave a spirited rendering of "Waiata POl. Miss Dulcie Mitchell sang "The Broken Vase" and "Last Night I Dreamed," and Mr and Mrs Francis Bate and Mr Bidgood played two instrumental trios, "Andante," Trio A (Papini), and "Les Bons Vieux" (Banes). Games and competitions were enjoyed and as a result of the pleasant gathering Miss Dwyer will have a goodly supply of jams and preserves With, which to furnish the pantry shelves in her new home. ,; .
