INSUM poA, BASE FOR R-OU&fl OAS»T> Z UI 25 si eft INSULATION. In England, America, Canada,' Australia, and on the Continent, the matter of "Insulation" is now a very definite consideration in planning modern homes and in'renovating and remodelling existing buildings. Froni the points of view of economy in building costs, the substantial reduction effected in heating costs during winter months, and the maintenance of cool indoor temperature in summer, the more general use of an insulating medium is highly , desirable, and following the advances made in this direction in larger countries, ' ' insulation" is now being given in New Zealand the attention which it rightly deserves. ' ' _ Approximately 60 per cent, of the heat generated within an uninsulated home is lost, by conduction and radiation through walls and roofs, and of this loss it is estimated that 65 per cent passes through the roof and the remaining 35 per cent, through walls and other points of escape- It is therefore obvious that the use of an efficient insulating medium, by largely preventing this heat loss makes homes more livable during winter, in addition to considerably reducing heating costs. / All building materials have insulating properties in a greater or lesser degree, and comparisons are quite impossible on other than scientific tests. The insulating properties in any material are determined and calculated in terms of British thermal units per hour per Bquare foot per degree Fahrenheit per inch of thickness, and it is on this basis that comparisons must be mada in order to determine the most suitable insulating medium. —.j
