PRIZE-GIVINGS.

DIGBrs commercial SCHOOL.

The annual prize-giving and concert o* Digby'g Commercial School was .held last evening in the Jellicoe Hall. After a musical concert the prizes were presented by Miss M. D. Digby, aid dancing was held for the remainder of the evening. Thj school year just ended shows an wu ®, nt record of work achieved by fcoth day and evening students, said the annual report presented by Mr H. «iJ? d ?5 oll '- a feature being the splendid progress madeby a number of first-year pupils, several of whom—having no previous knowledge of shorthand ® r typewriting—are now writing shorthand at 120 words per minute and have attained a speed in typewriting of froin 30 to 40 words per minute. One pupil, after receiving only six months' tuition, was writing shorthand at 100 words-per minute, and several first-year students were successful candidates at the tublie Service Entrance examination for shorthand-typists held in November, last. These very gratifying results are due to the energy, and interest displayed. Tight throughout the year by members of the school staff, who have encouraged Ji.ll students to put forth their best efforts, and also to, the facilities afforded' by the full use of the school building in Worcester street, in which we have now completed our second year of occupation. The school equipment is kept w<sll tip-to-date and several new typewriters have recently been installed. One hundred and sixty-eight Pitman and Gregg Shorthand Speed and Theory Certificates were gained by students as the results of theory and speed examinations conducted during the year by the Ohristchurch Shorthand Writers' Association, , the rates ranging from 60 to 160 words per minute. 0f the 84 school students who entered for the Pabllo Service .shorthand-typists' examination in November. 81 were successful. Winifred Sherris obtaining first place on .the New Zealand order of merit list.?in'the intermediate examination (being one of the four successful Canterbury candidates), : and Irene Young second place on the Ohriabchurch order of merit list in the senior examination. VICTORY MEMORIAL SCHOOL.

Cation 8. Hamilton, Victir of the parish, Welcomed parents and friends fce the breaking-ttp cotemony of St. Matthew's Victory Memorial School yesterday afternoon. Tho school, lie gold, tad had & very satisfactory year, thanks to the efforts of teachers, parents, And children. There was a very fine body of pupilsin the school. The future of the school was at present in doubt, hoW6VO#, but there 'was no danger Of It being closed up' this year. The question of how theschool could be maintained after thia ybar would have to be givau serious consideration, as it was a heavy burden eft tho diocese. I3&ch child required the expenditure annually of £66 on its education, of which tho parents, contributed £3 and the dioccSe £ 2 10s. A diocesan committee.WoUld probably be appointed during tho year to consider the question. He apologised for the absence of the headmaster, Mr L S. Gardiner, who had failed a victim tu the epidemic of chickeh-pox recently provalent anlong the smaller children.

Dead JuliUa, Who distributed tLo prises, bald, that it was confidently expiated that ways and means would be found td 1 continue the school in the future. It was making splendid progress, hut the difficulty waß that the bigger it grow the greater burdeh it was to the diocese. "A good many pessimistic statements have been made recently in regard to education," said the l)eath "Perhaps it is only a corollary of the general depression that is liow A&dCtlttg (ill our activities, but unfortunately thfi' statements hq,vo been made by people who should know all about tnGif subject, headmasters and headmistresses. "A learned man onco made the statemetkt| M said the Dean, "that the only that made education tolerable was •ft# ■ comparative inefficiency. Certainly thctd ftCethS to have been some truth in hislltftiftrndttt, for increased efficiency in education has succeeded in giving us ft little k&owledge of psychology With Its Attendant quacks and charlatans, and an increased grasp of science witli its product of moro murderous instruments of warfare" In this respect, the Church schools seemed to be working on the fight lines, said the Dean. "They are giving us not only the tools of knowledge but the motive for using those toola for the right purpose, and without Which education may constitute a danger to the community." Mr 0. H. Clibborn, in a short speech, assured his hearers that Synod would not Close the school if it could possibly avoid' doing so. • ,

CATHEDRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL.

gymnasium at the Cathedral Grammar School was packed with parents, friends of the school, and Pupils last evening, when the prizes for the year were presented by Archbishop Julius, Included in the evening's programme were items by the School orchestra and tho Cathedral Choristers, ! The headmaster (the Rev. S. Pair) presented the eighth annual report of the school, The roll stood now at 142, ahd of these only ono boy of the first year of the school was now left, The secondary school had a roll of -40, and , examination , successes in the past year Included three matriculation passes, one engineering preliminary; one Somes Scholarship, on« senior national scholarShip, and two higher leaving Certificates. In sports, too, tho school had had considerable distinction, in swimming, shooting, tennis, cricket, and football. The primary department had maintained a splendid standard, aswae revealed by the inspectors' reports. In Church work, many boyß held offices, In addition' to the Cathedral choristers. :ThCr« w&s to bo only one change in the staff, ' Miss M; Davies had accepted an appointment us travelling -secretary to the Girls' Bible Class movement, and Miss T. Satchell, formerly of Little St. Margaret's, had been, appointed to the vacancy. The' Archbishop recalled, in,the Courso of his address, the many doubts that raised when, tho question of the establishment .of the school was under consideration. It gave him great pleasure to see that it was how not only an excellent educational institution but a real factor for the wellbeing of the community. It was pleasing to see the success of the- school in such healthgiving pastimes as swimming, cricket, tennis, and football. .He stressed the i; necessity ? for a firm foundation in a boy's education, and urged his bearers not to take everything at its face value. Parity, truth, honour, reverence, love of God, and one's neighbour, were qualities that remained unchanged with the passage pi time, and the Church schools, in striving to Inculcate these qualities in their, pupils, were building the substratum without Whifeh no noble edifice of .character, qaitfdrf be built. In eonelusion, theAftsiibtshop wished pupils and staff a merry Christmas and as successful and happy a year as had been experienced in the past twelve months. NORMAL SCHOOL.

; Tho >. break ing-up ceremony of the Normal School was held in the Christchurch Training College flail yesterday afternoon. As is the custom with the 'Normal School, no prizes were awarded. The school had experienced a wonderfully good year, saiu tho headmaster, i»i.r VV. C. Colee, in remarking that it was almost the first occasion since 1918 that sohools throughout Canterbury had not suffered from an epidemic. Regular attendances and healthy children bad meant good work, with correspondingly better results than for a considerable time. This had been shown in the school work, in sport, and in the number of attendance certificates which had been given. The school's record had been exceptionally good in sport, and the cricket team had finished well up in their competition. The primary girls had won their basketball competition, and the girls of the secondary department had also done well. In swimming, tnft school had achieved credit in winning a life-saving competition. Mr Colee mentioned sucoesßes whicH had been gained in the secondary department in the awards of senior free places, and complimented the pupils. oo their having hroneht ont a magazine which was. including the printing, entirely their own work. % The work of. Standard VI. was the result of the ground work received throughout the whole school, said I» r Colee. and in the examinations at the end of the vear, out of S8 candidates, 36 had obtained proficiency certificates. the other two gaining coronet oncv. ■ ' , A orogramme of dancing, muiycai and elocutionary Hems was P!? e n during the afternoon hv the pupils of tne different standards.
