GREYMOUTH, December 14,

I Mrs T. G. Kitchingham, who has been on an extended visit to Invercargill, returned yesterday. Mr and Mrs J. Dickson, of Hornby, who have been visiting the West Coast, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Dr. W. McKay, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned yesterday. Mr J. Marshall (Eunanga), whose marraige takes place on Wednesday in the Eoman Catholic Cathedral, Christchurch, left yesterday for Christchurch. Valedictory. School teachers from all parts of the Grey district met yesterday, when a presentation of a suitcase and umbrella was made to Mr M. Malone, headmaster of the Eunanga School, who is retiring on superannuation at the end of the month, after forty-one years' service. Mr H. E. Barrett, headmaster of the Cobden School, presided. The meeting had been convened by the Grey branch of the Teachers* Institute, with which Mr Malone had been associated since its inception. The chairman, in making the presentation, said Mr Malone had worked assiduously m the service of the Teachers' Institute, and his services had been very much appreciated. Other speakers commended the long and useful service of Mr Malone, who, replying, expressed his appreciation of the gifts and kind remarks of the speakers. He was the last of the original members of the Grey branch of the Teachers' Institute, of which he was now president. After forty-one years he found it hard to make up his mind to break away his colleagues and associates. J-"® presentation would always be to him a tangible reminder of his West Coast colleagues. . , r . , At Kumara last evening Mr Patrick Fitzgerald, who has been Public Works overseer in _that district for the past twenty years, and has retired on superannuation, after forty years' service, was entertained by the staff of the Public Works Department and friends., Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer of Public Works, presided, and during the evening presented Mr Fitzgerald with a gold watch and chain, from the staff, in appreciation of his long service on the West Coast. Mr Sampson, Assistant-Engineer, handed Mr Fitzgerald an afternoon tea service, for presentation to Miss Eileen Fitzgerald, his daughter, in appreciation of her hospitality to the staff and workmen. Mr Fitzgerald is being succeeded by Mr Thornhill Cooper, from Paroa. Motor Collision. A collision occurred on the Grey road main highway, between Waimaunga and the road to Waiuta, when a ear driven by Mr E. W. Spencer, struck a motorlorry supplying gravel to the _ m <" n highway. The motor-ear was badly wrecked, but no injury was suffered by either driver. The place where the collision occurred was an awkward bend where the view was somewhat obstructed. Hokitika High School. The break-up and prize-giving ©f the Hokitika District' Hi&h School' ' took place on Friday. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr A. C. Armstrong) presided. Mrs J. The West Coast Rugby Union have decided to purchase 6J acres of land in the vicinity of Milton road, from Mr -P. J. McLean, and an adjoining one and one-third acres, from the Joyce Estate. It is intended to proceed to put the ground in order as soon as possible. A Ground Committee, consisting of Messrs J. Guy, J. Kay, T. O'Donnell, and F. Eggelton, haß been appointed for that purpose. Borough Council. The Hokitika Borough Council met, wheel there were present: Crs. D. J» Evans (Deputy-Mayor), T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, E. W. Heenan, Dr. Teichelmann, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, and Jas. King. The Hokitika Harbour Board forwarded a copy of a resolution passed by the Harbour Board: "That the permission granted the Borough Council to use the foreshore for a rub-bish-dump be terminated, and the road closed forthwith, the Borough Council to be asked to have the offensive matter covered." The chairman said that the Council must accept most of the blame for not keeping a proper supervision- of the dump. He moved that the dump be cleaned by the Borough staff. It was resolved that the Mayor and Cr. Evans should wait on the Harbour Board and endeavour to come to some agreement regarding the dump. The Governor-General's private secretary - wrote stating that this Excellency proposed to visit Hokitika on January 31st, and would probably stay till Monday. It was resolved that the Mayor, Deputy-Mayor, and Town Clerk arrange for the reception of his Excellency. It was resolved.that the Mayor, De-puty-Mayor, Crs. Heenan and Armstrong be a committee in connexion with the unemployment representation scheme. Cricket. To-day's cricket fixtures were played in glorious weather. Yesterday's fixtures were postponed on account of rain. To-day's results were:— Bhinner A beat Eunanga A by 214. to 134 on their firßt innings, played at Dobson. For Brunner, Henderson 83, Kerr 49, and Hogarth 40 were the best scorers. For Eunanga, Hunter 52, Smithson 49, and Nicholson 11 were the highest scorers. Marist A beat Cobden B by an innings and 46 runs. Marist compiled 310, and Cobden 34 and 30. For Marist, Morris scored 51, and accounted for four wickets for Bin Cobden's first innings, and eight for 10 in the second. Matthews took four in Cobden's first innings for 9. Star beat Ivokiri 103 to 71, at Kokiri, on the first innings. For Star, Thompson scored 42, Johnston 14, and Nelson 13. For Kokiri, Curtain 24 and Loonoy 23 wero the leading scorers. Nelson secured five of Kokiri's wickets for 26, and McNabb , three for 26. Eooney took three Star wickets for 9.

United A scored a three-point win from United B. United A scored 59 in their first and 88 for three in their stcond initings. United B scored 58 in their first, and 85 for five (declared) ia their se.cond innings. In the first

innings Nightingale scored 20, and Restieaux 19. In the second, Nightingale made 41 not out, and Casey 19. United B's best scorers in the first innings were: Gilbert 27, Jacobsen 9 not out, and in the second, Spender 36 not out, F. Baldwin 23, and Gilbert 15. Plunket Society. The Eunanga Sub-Branch of the Plunket Society opened their new rooms yesterday afternoon, when there was a good attendance. Among those present were representatives of the Greymouth branch. The Mayor (Mr E. McTaggart) congratulated the branch on its enterprise in raising sufficient money to build its own rooms, thus gaining the distinction of being the first branch on the West Coast to own rooms. He handed the key to the president (Mrs King), who opened the door, and declared the rooms open. The committee then entertained those present at afternoon tea.
