HAREWOOD METHODIST CHURCH.
JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Frieston (Harewood) Methodist Church were concluded oti Thursday) when an old-time tea meeting was held in the Harewood Hall. Last Sunday special services were held, with ciowded congregations. Ihe R«v. \Vni. Daumber preached in tho altcrnoon and the Rev. M. A. R. Pratt in the evening. Mrs \V. F. McArthur was hoioist. Many former members of the congregation were present, several of whom came long distances to attend. On Tuesday evening a young people's rally was held, when the local Bible class members and their friends were present, as well as contingents from Papanui and Belfast. Mr H. T. Twose, Sunday t-chool superintendent, was in tho chair. Choruses were given by the Belfast junior choir, under Mr W. Salkeld, and a rendering of one of A. A. Milne's entertaining playettes. Mr D. C. McArthur, of "Belfast, an old scholar of the Frieston Sunday school, g:ive nn interesting account of the early days of the church and school. At the old-time tea on Thursday the tables were prettily decorated, and visitors from far and near were hospitably welcomed. After the tea a sf-rvico was held in the church, .at ■which the singing was conducted by Mi' S. Lewis Orchard, now of Ohoka, the first choirmaster. Mrs D. C. McArthur (nee Miss Twose 1 ) played tho organ. An address was given by tho Rev. A. N. Scott-er, president of the Methodist Conference.
On returning to the hall, which was crowded for the iubilee public meeting, the Rev. A. Hopper, minister of the Papanui circuit, presided. Addresses were given by the Rev. Alfred Peters, a former minister; the Rev. Mr Scot>ter, Mr R.. W. Hawke, M.P., Messrs Watson, Wilkinson, and S. L. Orchard. Mr H. T. Twose read letters from the Rev. C. H. Standage (Timaru), E. O. Blamires (Masterton), J. D. McArthur, H. Ryan, and other friends and well-wishers. Mr Twose gave eomo interesting extracts from old-time records preserved by Miss E. Turner, whose parents had been associated with tho founding of the church. Musical items were given by Miss Thelma Harris and Mr O. M. Jones. Mrs W. F. McArthur and Mrs O. M. Jones acted as accompanists. The proceedings terminated with the Doxology and the Benediction. Regret was expressed that ill-health had prevented the Rev. Samuel La wry from being present. He had been one of the early ministers at Harewood. A feature of the Thursday evening was the cutting of the birthday cake. This was done by Mrs Clist (nee Miss the oldest member of the congregation. The cake was made by -irs Jesson and was illuminated bv sixtv candles.
