A merger of all collieries in Lancashire and Cheshire was recently decided upon in Manchester by owners representing the whole of the vast coalfields in the two counties. The scheme will involve £20,000,000 of capital, amalgamate about 140 collieries and affect 86,* 500 workers. It applies to both sides, of the industry—working and distribution —and in effect represents one of the greatest attempts at rationalisation yet made in this country. Between 18.000,000 and 20.000.000 tons of coal are produced each year by the Lancashire and Cheshire coalfields. WAIHEMO TO RECOMMISSION. The Union Company's Pacific cargo steamer Waihemo, which has been laid up at Port Chalmers for some weeks, will recommission at that port to-day.
