CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce met last evening. There were present: Messrs A. O. Wilkinson (acting-president), in the chair, W. Bottrell, J. Anderson, jun., P. Davidson, 11. S. Williams, B. E. H. Whiteombe, W. 11. Nicholson, W. Machin, A. F. Wright, A. E. Kincaid, A. G. Cannons, F. J. Shanks, H. Munro, K. H. Webb, W. K.. Carey, P. 11. Harris, C. E. Jones, J. W. Graham. A M. Burns, V. E. Hamilton, A. C. Brelhorton, J. MacUibbon, C. H. HewI lett, C. P. Agar, Norton Francis, and J. Boy Smith (secretary). The chairman of the Transport Committee (Mr A. O. Wilkinson) reported that a special meeting had been held on November 2fth, at winch Mr L. (J Walker explained his scheme for a train ferry between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. committee was of opinion that at the present time the scheme was very far ahead of the Dominion's requirements. The report was adopted. Registration of Asiatics. In reference to the registration of Asiatics, the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Auctioneers' and Importers' Federation wrote urging that the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand should have the recommendations of the Chambers of Commerce of Christchurch and all other centres in order to have legislation passed whereby traders would know where they stood in trading transactions with Asiatics. Tho Canfierbury Chamber was asked to give its fullest support to such legislation. It was decided to write to the Federation advising it of the Chamber s support. The Air Ma^l. The manager of Ail* Travel drew the Chamber's attention to tho saving of time in air mails both to and from Duncdin. While the firm, felt that it had the Chamber's support, it would be glad to receive suggestions for the alteration of the time-table so that a sound air mail, urgent parcel, and passenger service might be developed to meet the requirements of the Chamber. The letter was received. Teachers' Summer School. The secretary of the Teachers' Summer School (Mr A. J. Campbell) wrote enclosing a copy of the syllabus and asking for the Chamber's support. The letter was received and it was decided to congratulate the committee on the production of the booklet. The North Canterbury branch of the -New Zealand Farmers' Union conveyed tho thanks of its executive for the solid support of primary industries sit the recent conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and especially for the fight put up on behalf of the Canterbury farmer. The letter was received.

The Zealand®. Milling Company, Ltd., Riccarton, wrote asking the Chamber's support in having a shelter erected over the new railway siding which is to be built at Addington. The question was referred to the transport committee. Financial Statement. Accounts amounting to £2ll 3s 7d, including donations of £IOO to Canterbury College, and £lO 10s to the Christchurch Technical College, were passed for payment. Receipts amounted to £2Ol 2s, whicli, with a credit balance of £l7B 16s 9d at October 31st, left a credit balance of £l6B 15s 2d at November 30th. The following were elected to the membership:—Estate J. D. McGruer, Mount Cook Tourist Company of New Zealand, Ltd., Eugene Spitz, Swift Ivew Zealand Co., Ltd. The representative of Staling and Co., Ltd., was changed from Mr P. Sherlock to Mr V G. Cameron, and that of R. Arlow and Co Ltd., from Mr R. H. Arlow to Mr P. Sherlock. Exchange of Greetings. The ijhnirman reported that the offices would be closed l>etweeii December 24tli and January Bth. On Behalf of the, president (Mr H. S. E. Turner) and himself, Mr Wilkinson expressed the season's greetings to the council arid wished all members a happy holiday. Mr Agar wished to convey to Mr and the officers of the Chamber the members' goodwill and best wishes. It was decided to send a letter of welcome to greet the president on his •arrival ,in New Zealand.
