ST. ALBANS BURGESSES.
ASSOCIATION MEETS. The St. Albans Burgesses' Association met on Tuesday evening, when it was reported that the City Council had begun the work of setting back the footpath and widening the traffic way in Springfield road. Satisfaction was expressed at the fact that the Association s efforts had borne fruit. The Town Clerk advised that provided a sufficient sum of money was forthcoming the work of improving the channelling in Trafalgar street would be put in hand. It was decided to ask the City Council to undertake the work of top-dressing footpaths in St. Albans, and it was pointed out that this would assist in providing work for the un-. employed. Complaints were made that some verandahs at the corner of Mansfield avenue and Papanui road, and an electric light pole at the corner of Aldridge street and Durham street, were becoming dangerous to pedestrians, as they were likely to fall. One member said that the whole trouble was that the building inspectors had not the time to go and see that jobs were well done. Another member said that conditions governed the work that could be done by plumbers and electricians, but any "jerry builder" could put what work he liked into a building provided he had a permit issued after the plans had been inspected. A sub-committee was appointed to make investigations with a view to approaching the City Council on the matter.. Several members commented favourably on the working of the automatic traffic signals at the Colombo street and Cashel street intersection.
