FALSE RETURNS ALLEGED.
CHARGE AGAINST CHEMICAL MANUFACTURER. (UNITED ?aBSS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) LONDON, December 2. The Inland Revenue Commissioners have charged Theophile Jean Baptiste Desnos, chemical manufacturer, of Richmond, Surrey, with falsely understating by £18,852 his super-tax returns foi six years from 1921 to also with submitting false returns claiming relief for the three years 1914 to 1917. These included rendering alleged false accounts of the Tasmaman Eucalptus Oil Company from 191.Q to 1925. The total omissions amounted to £IOO.OOO. and defendant was liable to £40,000 in taxation, of which £35,200 had been paid. Desnos said he had won £85,000 by gambling at Monte Carlo in 1914 and 1915. 'fhe oil company had branches in London and Melbourne, and it is alleged that Desnos held the majority of the shares. , It was disclosed that the profits or the London business were concealed as Australian, namely £10,000,. winch therefore never paid British mcomeThe case was adjourned.
