BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION
MEETING AT SUMNER. Mr S. K. Bassett presided over a meeting of the Sumner Beautifying and Beach Improvement Association. Motions of sympathy were passed with two members —Mr T. Undrill, who is suffering from a painful illness, and Mr J. A. Booth, who met with an accident on Monday. The secretary reported that by arrangement with the officers of the Sumner Borough Council, planting had been completed at Cave Rock corner. The deciduous trees planted during the spring, on the reserve alongside the Clifton zig-zag, were doing well, as were the shrubs on the lower reaches of the jsifj-zag. Mr A. J. Scott reported satisfactory progress in organising the Borough gardens competition. Advice has been received that the Itedcliifs Burgesses Association would join in the competition. It was decided to make a separate section for gardens on the hills, and to provide separately for gardens of between one-quarter and half an acre, if entries were forthcoming. Mr A. J. Scott and the president and secretary were appointed to classify the entries. It was decided to have the judging done by fully qualified members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, on the afternoons of Friday and. Saturday, November 28th and 29th when competitors would have an opportunity to discuss horticultural matters wtfh them. Thanks were accorded Mr R. B. Owen for his offer of cypress trees for planting on the hill-face at the east end of Nayland street. Mr J. F- Buxton drew attention to further thefts and -vandalism -on the reserve at Clifton. It was decided to refer the matter to the police.
