At this time of year, wlion many people are thinking of buying thoir first car, which may perhnps be second* hand and_a trifle worn, it is opportune to repeat a time-honoured hint for deadening, transmission noises. It consists simply of placing an extra layer of oarpot underneath the existing floor mats. Any worn«out carpet from the homo will serve the .purpose, and there is no need to take any special care in cutting it to or binding tho edges, because, being covered by the normal floor mats, it will be quite out of sight. Besides bringing about a marked improvement in the silence of the car, extra mats make the floor much more comfortable to the feet and, if cut to #orai a close fit round the pedals, sure freedom from draughts.
