Last year's report by the Health Ministry's Chief Medical Officer, Sir George Newman, shows that births in Great Britain were 043,673, and deaths 532,492 The natural' increase of population was thus only 2.9 a 1000, compared with five in 1928. and 15 from 1916 to 1920. Nevertheless the health of the people was relatively sound, though cancer doaths numbering 56,896,. were the highest on record.
