NORTH CANTERBURY.

KAIKOURA. The garden party organised in aid of the Presbyterian Church was held in fine weather on Saturday afternoon at the beautiful grounds of Mr and Mrs F. H. Flower. Brisk business was done at the various stalls, and afternoon tea was served under the trees. The Rev. r. Robertson officially opened the lunctioii, and thanked all who hud assisted in any way. He expressed pleasure> at seeing so many present. The stalls were in the hands of the followUV»Li] . and produce, Mesdames Withers, Williamson, and Miss Flower; 6weets and ice cream, Mesdames C. Murray and Miss Dartnell being the judges. The prizes were awarded to babies Pernn and Brondchurch, who were equal for urst, and babies Flint and Schroder, equal for second. Mrs H. Harrison was the winner of the picture competition. £r k. Williamson won the turkey and Mrs t,. Harris the cake. Three cheerg wore given for Mr and Mrs Flower for tne use of their grounds. Sincere regret will be felt by the people of Kaikoura at the death of »*t McLauchlan, relict of Mr Ar>?us McLauchlan, who died at her daughter's residence at Waverley on October 31st, at the age of 88 years. Mrs McLauchlan had resided in Kaikoura for many years, and was held in the highest respect by all who knew her. On the Kaikourn bowling green on Saturday the match between Walter an . c ' Washington and Murray i! 00 , i anc * Knight resulted in a draw, 16 all. Cricketers had an enjoyable time on Xaknhanga Domain on Saturday afternoon, when a match between Parnassus and Kaikoura took place. There was a good attendance of spectators , and some splendid play was Witnessed. Parnaesus batting first put up a score of 157. Kaikoura made 217. CULVERDEN. The Culverden branch of the Farmers' Union paid a visit to Lincoln College, 28 members taking advantage of the opportunity afforded them. The Hockey Club's dance was held in the Amuri Hall. It was an unqualified success. Opportunity was taken to present to Mrs A. W. Pitt (secretary for the past season) a crystal vase, and to Messrs J. Ross (coach), and W. Smith (referee), tokens of appreciation of their useful services throughout the season. Mr A. W. Pitt, who has been master of the Culverden School for the past ten months, has been transferred to Little River. On the day of his departure a presentation was made to him by his two assistants and the pupils of the school, who also gathered to farewell him at the railway station. Culverden was favoured with ideal weather over the week-end, and farmers in general are hoping that the longawaited summer weather has now set in. The tennis courts in the local Domain are now in first-class condition, and players are steadily gaining enthusiasm. Members of the committee of the Tennis Club are now receiving entries for the Macfarlane Cup, which is played for annually. Culverden played Waiau in the cricket competition, at Waiau," when Culverden made 141 for eight wickets, and Waiau, 89. ■ Mr F. Wilson, from Camerons, on the West Coast, has been appointed to take charge of the Culverden school. ROTHERHAM. ' i On Saturday the Hanmer cricket team met Rotherham on the Rotherham Domain. Hanmer batted first, making 76. Rotherham replied with 48. The best batsmen for Hanmer were O'Lachlan, Barker, and McKay, and for Rotherham Gibbs, Davics, and Parker. The most successful bowlers for Hanmer were Hart and O'Lachlan, while D. Davies was outstanding for Rotherham. No competition games will be played for the next two Saturdays. On Saturday evening the Rotherham Crioket Club held a most successful dance in the Rotherbam Hall. Miss Danielson supplied the music, Miss M. Mcintosh playing extras. Mr Ron. Halkett was M.C. During the evening the results of tho guessing competition for the iced cake and the goose given by Mrs H. Palmer was announced. Mr F. Hand won the cake and Mr Gallagher won the goose. With the more settled weather conditions, shearing is now in progress in tho district. CUST. Playing at Cust on Saturday, the Cust' cricket team defeated Rangiora. Rangiora compiled 69 (Hawkins 17, Mahoney 13, Carlyon 12). Bowling for Cust, W. Sail took three wickets for 26 runs, T. O'Loughlin four for 26, J. O'Loughlin two for 7, P. O'Loughlin one for none. Cust made 126 (H. Sail 16, Smith 14, T. O'Loughlin 43, W. Sail 12 retired, C. Eaglesome 19). The most successful bowlers for Rangiora were Steel one for 45, Mahoney three for 28, Hawkins four for 16, Fisher one for 25. The annual church parade in connexion with the Loyal Cust Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held at the Presbyterian Church at Cust" on Sunday afternoon. There was a large attendance. The preacher was Mr A. - Simmonds. Solos were sung by Mrs Overend and Mr T. B. Lock. Misß A. Wayland was the organist, and was assisted by Mr Peaching. The marshal was Mr R. Brunsden. GREENPARK. There was a good attendance at the social held in the Grecnpark Hall on Friday evening in aid of the hall j funds. Prizes were won by Mrs Studholme (Tai Tapu), Mrs W. Jordan (Lincoln), and Messrs J. Clark and S. Bennett. Prizes for the highest aggregate .points were won' by Mrs W. Jordan (Mrs H. Thomas being, runner-up) and Mr J. Clark (Mr A. H. Clark being runner-up). Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs McLachlan (Tai Tapu) and Mr Marks. Thanks were accorded i Mesdames Stalker and McLachlan for giving trophies. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs Clark, extras being played by Miss Eileen Chapman (South Springston) and Mrs Marks. Mr G. Jarnan was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Rickerby and Mr J. Clark, aad a Mont 6 Carlo one-step by Mr and Mrs McLachlan (Tai Tapu). The members of the Greenpark Methodist Church have undertaken to furnish a miscellaneous stall at the Methodist garden party to be held in j Tai Tapu. A canvass will be made ; shortly for suitable gifts.

MAIREHAU. The Mairehau hall was taxed to its utmost on the occasion of a complimentary social tendered to the Basketball Club, by the residents of the district. During the year the A team won the B Grade competition, gaining the Buist Shield, and went through the season without a loss. It also gained the Brown cup, by winning every game in the June 3rd tournament. The B team ivon its section in the C Grade competition, and was runner-up in the June 3rd tournament. Of nineteen games played, the team won seventeen. The chairman (Mr J. L. Parish), on behalf of the residents of the district, congratulated the girls on their great suscess, and thanked them for bringing such full honours to the district. He also wished them well for the future. Mr G. Chisnall spoke on behalf of the Marshland Club. He congratulated the Mairehau teams on their very successful year. Mr L. H. Wilson, on behalf of the Cricket Club, and Mr W. J. Waited, on behalf of the Cycling Club, also spoke. An enlarged framed photograph of each team was presented by Parish to the respective teams. Miss It. Buxton and Miss E. Beck (captains of the teams) thanked the gathering for the gifts and good wishes. Mr Parish then referred to the help given to the club by the president (Mr J. B. Walter), who had also acted as coach for the teams. Miss K. Buxton, on behalf the members, presented Mr Walter with a framed photograph of the A team. HORRELVILLE. Playing against Eyreton on Saturday, the Horrelville cricket team secured a two-point win. Eyreton, batting first, made 41 (Griffin 11). Bowling for Horrelville, Peterson took four wickets for 6 runs, Beer three for 8, Dennis three for 13. Horrelville replied with 49 (Forrest 18). The best bowlers for Eyreton wore Smith two wiekets for 7 runs, Griffim two for 12, Higginson two for 4. HORORATA. The members of the Hworata Football Club held a smoke concert in the pavilion on Saturday evening, in honour of two members of the club, Messrs H. Milne and H. Thome, who were recently married. An enjoyable evening was spent in community singing, songs, music.al items, and speeches. Mr W. R. Oliver (president of the club) asked th© guests (on behalf of the club) each to accept a fruit dish, with best wishes for their future health and happiness. The following are the meteorological observations for October, as recorded by Mr G. L. Hight, Hororata: Rain fell on 14 days, the maximum fall being 54 points on the 18th; total fall for the month was 227 points (68pts in 1921> and 439pts in 1028). Twelve frosts were recorded during the past month, the* heaviest being one of nine degrees on the 16th. MOTUKARARA. The annual general meeting of tho Motukarnra llall Committee was held, when there was a smell attendance. Mr J. Miller presiding. The balancesheet showed that the weekly dance meetings during the winter had been a financial success, and considering that the hall had been renovated during the year the balance of £2O was thought to be very satisfactory. The following committee was elected: Messrs J. Miller, C. F. Bowley, W.. O'Neill, E. Hodgen, T. Giddens, and T M. Wheeler. The Waihora, Rod and Gun Club report that fishing in the Halswell has fallen off considerably since the phenomenal bags obtained during the tirst fortnight of the season. Good fish are still to be obtained, but more patience is required. Arrangements are under way for another visit from a first-class tennis party to the Waihora courts, [ probably during next week-end. The I party will play exhibition games.

kirwee. The rainfall at Kirwee for October was 1.95 in. Rain fell on nine daye, with a maximum fall of 62 points on th« 26th. Daring the month there were several very cold and stormy sou'-west-crs. There was also n severe frost on the 16th, which destroyed stone fruits that were in exposed Positions, tor th» corresponding month of 19J9 the verv low fall of 28 points was registered. The total fall for the ten months ending October 31st was 24.32 m and for the corresponding penoa or 1929 it was 25.08 in. The local Amateur Athletic Club held its fortnightly social on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance and a very pleasant time was spent. Competitions were won by Mrs J. Pascoe and Mrs A Smith and Messrs M V. Davis and C. Page. Dance music was supplied by Mr Batstone. During the evening opportunity was taken oy members of the club to present a cup .to Mr J. W. Batstone. in commemoration of his feat in breaking the New Zealand pole jump record at the Kirwee sports last autumn Mr Batstone was born in Kirwee. Playing ;n the Malvern Sub-Associa-tion's cricket competition on. Saturday Darfield defeated Kirwee by 73 tuns. Scores: Darfield 171 (J. Millard HI J. Gurni 24, W. Somerville 16, H. Otten 14, and G. Porteous 10). Kirwee 95 (A Roper 31, M. Wilson 20, and E Pratt 11). The bowlers for Darfield were J, Gunn eight for 28, Black one for 8, Stewart one f°r 0, Otten none for 7 and Porteous none for 4-8. and for Kirwee A Roper five for 64. M. Wilson four for 33, A. Anderson one for _4O and G W, Soa! pone for 23. Whilst batting for Kirwee R. W. MrMeekan had the misfortune to hnve his nose broken. The accident was caused by a ball which rose sharply off one corner of the bat and struck hinj on the nose.

BROOMFIELD. A social evening was held in the Broomfield School to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs T. Edwards and family on the eve of their departure for Christchurch. Garner, competitions, and dancing were enjoyed by those present. Music was played by Mesdames Belcher and Burney, and extras by Miss Watt. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss Joan Croft and Colin Streeter, and games were won by Mrs Belcher and Mr S. Thompson. A guitar duet was played by Miss N. Smart and Mr 11. Croft, and songs were sung by Messrs T. Edwards, Perry, Burney, and T. Arlington. Mr Briggs, speaking on behalf of the School Committee and residents, expressed regret that Mr and Mrs Edwards and family were leaving the district. He called upon Mr R. Hunter to present a teaset to the guests of the evening. Mr Edwards suitably responded. A well-attended meeting of the School ' .Jubilee Committee was held. Owing to the illness of the chairman (Mr S. Worrall), Mr S. F. Croft was voted to the chair. After discussion it was decided to send 1 invitations to nil ex-scholars. Other business was gone into, and it was decidea to "Olcl another meeting in, a fortnight- A committee* consisting of Mrs Briggs. Mrs J. Streeter, Miss Smart, and Messrs R. Hunter, L. Croft, and <C. Fairweather was appointed.
