LAKE ELLESMERE DRAINAGE.

TO THJS EDITOR OP THE' PRESS Sir ; —As a one-time resident on the shores of Lake Ellesmcre, and also as a contractor,. I was an interested spectator at the trial of the caterpillar tractor and scoop at the ouilet of the j lake on October ,18th. and I have waited patiently -to see what was the verdict. It struck me at the time from the way some of the Board were" making the driver do his work that they did' not know anything about scooping shingle. They made the driver take a cut off the side ot the hole, and when the tractor would not pull the loaded scoop out there was a smile on some of their faces. Now i will defy any one of the Board to do the same thing until horses. I was also very much surprised to see iu the account of the Board meeting last week that they claimed that the scoop shifted only 2-3 yards. It they had measured the load at the top of the bank instead of making, the driver travel over a chain after reaching the top. and so letting a larce amount of shingle shake off the scoop, thev would have tound, I think ; a full yard or more.

Now, Sir, 1 understand £hat thor6 is an election coming oil soon, and I hope the ratepayers will ask the sitting members ivl.iv tliey are mnrrioi. to the methods that their grandfathers used- I heard one member of the Board say very emphatically that the onlv way was with horses. Groad, in his letter yesterday, lias a new idea, which from what f can make out is a dragline. Would this shift more than 200 cubic ya,rds in eight hours? I have mv doubts. — i ours, ° tC " CONTRACTOR. November 2nd, 1930.
