DECREASE IN CUSTOMS REVENUE. , The monthly Abstract of Statistics reveals tbat revenue from imports of both tobacco and. cigarettes showed a substantial decrease in August, as compared with the corresponding month of 1929, but it is difficult to estimate the proportion of the loss attributable to the higher Customs duties, which came into effect under the new tariff on July 22nd. It is considered that the new duties have not been in effect long enough for a clear indication -to be given yet as to the influence of the increased charges. Duties collected oa tobacco for the first eight months of each year were as follows:—l 929; £475,925; 1930, £497,933. The totals for August were:— 1929, £37,681; 1930, £31,269.
