NOTES ON THE RACING. rPKBSS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, October 10. Heavy rain during the night left the track for the opening of the Otaki Spring Meeting to-day very soft and in parts, especially down the back, the going was very holding. A feature of the day was the success 0 f the Awapuni- stable of J. P. Coyle. He won three races and also trained the runnerup in the principal handicap. As a reeult of a spill off .Lin Arlington in the hurdle race, A. Hobson broke a collarbone. Hobson's luck is right out, as he has only just resumed riding during the last month, after his serious accident whil* schooling Mister Gamp last autumn. The Hurdles. The Hurdle Baee was not featured by any promise on the part of the several fresh aspirants to jumping honours, who took part in the contest. One and all were well beaten and the finish rested between the experienced and wellperformed psir, Skyrider and Disr«nk. First Money made the early running from Masher, Limited, and Skyrider. Hasher took charge out of the straight and down the back was joined by Disrank, with Skyrider handy. Masher ,was beaten on the homo turn, Skyrider and Disrank drawing away and Bedtation, moving up. Once over the last fence Skyrider held off Disrank and beat him by half a length, with Redtation four lengths away third. Masher was fourfn, and then came Nippy, Our Jack, and Ladybird. Nothing had any chance with the first pair. Bedtation came from well back, anc T put up a creditable performance. Masher ran a fair race and Nippy was going well in-a hapdy ' position until ho suffered a complete breakdown. Limited gjad * Money jumped poorly and o*ily their pace kept them up near the front in the early stages. First Money fell at the fence five furlongs from hozqe, and Lip Arlington feil over him. felj at the same fence just after the start. f<?r Paxatoo. Paratoo's good form under difficulties in races like the Wanganui and Hawke's Bay Guineas made him look an outstanding competitor in the Maiden Plate and, being installed a warm favourite, he, won with ease. Paratoo began -best from Baskier, Intruder, and Valrewa, witfc Wallarub and Troubador most prominent of the others. Paratoo was out by himself on the home turn from Baskier and Valrewa, who also had daylight between them. Paratoo eventually won by six lengths from Baskier, who beat valrewa by two lengths. Troubadour was fourth, followed by Wallaruh, Intruder, Bon Acre, and Quereste?. Paratoo made an exhibition of his opponents and all things considered his i supporters got a good price. So did the backers of Baskier, whose form at

Wanganui merited more attention. There was some money for Valrewa, who ran a creditable race without ever looking as if she would do any better. Wallaruh and Intruder ran fair races and should improve. A Good Finish. Brilliant Light was never further back than third in the seven furlong race for hacks, and in a good finish with the favourite and pacemaker, Fitzquex, beat him by a head. Pass On was in the lead with Fitzquex to tho home turn from Brilliant Light and Projection. Then Cluny, who had got a bad run earlier, Fitzquex, and Brilliant Light drew away in the , straight, Brilliant Light winning by a short head. Cluny was two lengths away third, well clear of the fourth horse, Democratic. Then came Dainty Ways and Projection. The result represented form, hut Cluny looked unlucky. Pass On faikd to see it out. First Out, First Home. The light-weights went too well for the top of the handicap in the Ling Memorial Stakes, and Paiko, first out, was first home after leading all the way. Imateagirl joined him in front from Pahu and Ruanui, then Vertigern, Marjoram, and Balloon, with Merry Datnon whipping in. There was no change at all in the running except that on the home turn those in behind the leaders were being pushed to keep up with them. Paiko led into tho straight where Pahu threw out a determined challenge. Paiko, however, had something in resorve, and he bent his rival by half a length. Ruanui was two lengths and a half away, third, just heading off Vertigern. Then came Imateagirl, Merry Damon, arid Balloon, with Marjoram last. Paiko never looked like being caught. He is a greatly improved horse. Pahu ran in good form. Ruanui pulled hard all the way and had no run left. None of tho others was ever likely. Vertigern ran creditably and was always straggling in the heavy going, so that his performance was entirely satisfactory. Merry Damon put in a good lato finishing run. A Comfortable Win. The support for Trojan Melody in the hack sprint, for which he started a good favourite, indicated that ho would run well. He was always in or' near the front and won comfortably. Arajean, Trojan Melody, and Arrowhead began best and on the turn Trojan Melody led from Gowanlea, Tapestry, Lady Rene, Crash, and Arrowhead. Lady Rene came on best of tho bunch in the straight, but she had no chance of catching Trojan Melody, who beat her by just over a length. Arrowhead was three lengths away, third, clear of Gowanlea, Arajean, Dancing Star, and Arrowaone. They were a moderate lot and the winner scored very comfortably. Lady Rene ran up to form. | Accra Impressive. | Acora's performance in winning the open sprint was solid and good, for she was hampered by the going and had to put up a great effort in the straight. Veronese ami Equitant were slow away, Freehold, Acora, Arikinui, and Coon Song running in line for a furlong. Arikinui and Coon Song then took charge and led from Acora, Freehold, Melissa, and Veronese. Arikinui led into the straight and Acora got a run on the inner. She gradually overhauled the leader and under pressure she beat him by a neck. Freehold, who had dropped back in the middle stages, was a length away third, with Equitant fourth, then Veronese and Melissa with Coon Song last. Acora did not handle the ground well and appeared to be done on the turn into the straight. Here the better going saw her gallop very resolutely. Arikinui ran well, but had every chance. Freehold did not appear very lucky and fortune decidedly frowned upon Equitant. Melissa was disappointing. Favourite Faila. The hack distance event saw the complete failure of the favourite, Mount Shannon, who was in the rear throughout and nover got within measurable distance of the money. Cossation, Callamart, and Goldlike made the pace from Robbie's Mistake, Okapua, and Kiriana. Okapua dropped back on the turn and Callamart led at tho last furlong, where Robbie's Mistake challenged on the inner. She got up to beat Callamart by half a length. Playground made up a lot of ground in the last stages to run third, two lengths away. Cossation was fourth, followed by Lady Alophen, Okopua, and Goldlike. The winner and runnor-up represented form, but Playground proved a decided improver, and moreover looksd distinctly unlucky. Almost a Surprise. An outsider in Malayan nearly brought off a big surprise in tho concluding event, and might have done so had he not run out wide over the last bit. From a moving in start Tenacre and Malayan made the pace from Barneses and Broad Acre, then Best Friend and High Falutinwith Shining Armour tailing off. There was no change to the straight, where the field closed up. Tenaore held on and beat Malayan by half a length, with very little between Best Friend and Maui for third money. Then came Broad Acre, Barneses, and High Falutin'. The result never looked like being different at any stage of the race. Both winner and runner-up were all out at the finish, and the unlucky runner was Best Friend. He did not move off well, | and coming into the straight lost ground. | Maui was also pinched for room coming into line. High Falutin' nover showed up.
