OBITUARY.

MR J. H. NICHOLSON. Mr J. H. Nicholson, whose death occurred at Wellington last week, was for very many years a well-known resident of Nelson.- He was'born in London and spent part of his early life in South Africa, going to Nelson from that place over thirty years ago. In Nelson the late Mr Nicholson was particularly well known in connexion with thb Bishop Suter Art Society, of which he was one of the staunchest supporters and most consistent workers. As comparatively few have done he succeeded in catching the pronounced characteristic colours in Nelson landscapes and seascapes. Since leaving Nelson Mr Nicholson had painted in England, India and Wellington, and from time to time had remembered the Art Society exhibitions in Nelson by forwarding very welcome sketches. Mrs W. L. Scott, of Assam, India, who with her husband is at present in New Zealand, is-a daughter. MR MICHAEL BARRETT. The death occurred -at the Chrifltchurch Hospital, yesterday of Mr Michael- Barrett, - of" 217' Westminster street, who wa4 well-known as a member of the Veterans' Association,' and who fought in the, Maori War. Mr Barrett was born-. fit §t. John's . tVoodl, London- : in 1851, and came tp Canterbury in 1869 in the ship Mary Ann. He learned b& trade of carpentering in' this country, .and when a young man volunteered for, servioe. m the Maori. War.. He served four years in Wanganui and Taranaki, 4nd received the Maori War medal. At the end of the war; when the volunteers,each' received a grant of 60 acres of land, Mr Barrett, who was allotted a section near Wanganui, did not trouble to take it up. One of his epmpaniohs in the forces sold his section, which was adjacent to the present city of Wanganui, for £5 At the time of the visit of the Duke of York, he was presented to his Royal Highness.' Mr Barrett, who was . a brother/of the late Joseph Barrett,-the-aotor. is survived by Mrs Barrett and by" five sons and E. MiJner, of Thackeray street; Mrs A. Forward.,of Napier; and Messrs E. Barrett, of Hastings; F Barrett. of Waikukti; and J. Barrett, of Westminster street.
