SHIPPING NOTES. The port ■will be rather slack this week. Only one overseas vessel is due, with two intercolonial steamers, and rather fewer coastal vessels than usual. The-position on the- waterfront will improve considerably next-'week,-when a number of overseas vessels.'are due.- . 1■• The. Calm was due last night from Wariganai and Wellington, and is to sail this afternoon for Bluff, Dunedin, and Timaru. She; is due back on Friday to load for. Wellington and Wanganui. The City of Tokio is to leave New York on September 30th for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on November 4th. The Port Hunter is to sail • from New York on October 30th for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The Hertford is due at Auckland to-mor-row from Liverpool. She will discharge at that port and at Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Lyttelton (October 13th-15th), Port Chalmers, and New Plymouth. She will load at New Plymouth, Wanganui, Lyttelton (November sth-9th), Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland, and is to sail from Auckland on November 25th for Loudon.and West of England ports. The Otaki is due at Auckland on October 10th from Liverpool. She will discharge also at Wellington, Lyttelton (October 23rd26th). RIVETS STARTED IN HULL. (.rasas, association rm,s,as.\u.i AUCKLAND, September'-'.20, ' The Union Company's Kiwitea, bound from Auckland to Westport, commenced to make water in No. 2 hold last Wednesday and returned to Auck-land-last night. 'lt was believed that tho ballast tank had sprung a-leak, but since her return here it' has been discovered that there was an opening in the hull through the starting of the rivets. • ; "We had a terrible time," snid a member of the crew to-day. "We began to think we were a second Tahiti disaster." THE KOSMOS SAILS. 'Pi*3» i.iOUATIOX TCLZGSAX.) WELLINGTON, September 20. The whaling factory ship Kosmos, accompanied by her seven chasers, left Wellington at 11.45 o'clock this morning for the Rosa Sea. At 8 o'clock the Kosmos pulled out from her berth at the Pipitea Wharf to the stream, where she reloaded the explosives that have been stored for the last few days at Shelly Bay. Prior to sailing, three stowaways were found on board, and they were immediately sent- ashore again. The Kosmos intends to carry out whaling operations in the vicinity of the Ross Sea, and should be away for six months, returning to Wellington about next March.
