A GOVERNMENT CONTRACT.

TO- THE EDXTOB 0* THE EKIBS Sir, —I was greatly surprised to read that the Government Law Drafting Department has made a contract with an English firm for the reissue of 'the New Zealand Statutes. We are told on all sides, from, the Gover-nor-General right down to our own neighbour to support New Zealand industries. This is as it should be. Yet the Government quietly make a printing contract with a London firm, and then send to London a public servant at the Usual heavy expense. There are large printing works in New Zealand as well as newspaper companies, any of whom could do all the printing and binding for the Government. I think the Government is due for a severe censure over this, and I hope some of our local M.P.'s will bring the matter up in the House. The public are certainly entitled to an explanation. It makes one wonder if any more back door contracts h?we been handed out by the Government Departments, and also if any more civil servants are getting trips abroad at the expense of the public purse.—Yours, etc., J? » September 19 th, 1930.
