BOROUGH COUNCILS
RANGIORA. The fortnightly meeting of the R«ngiora Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr C. S. Ayers>, Crs. B. R. Gillanders, J. Lindon, R. H. Bailey, 0. V. Tyler, C. E. Bell, H. K. Ki»enberger, W. HorrelL F. K. Martyn, and \V. Carson Wilson. The Mayor referred to the serious, position in respect to the power shortage, and stated that the question of using the stand-by plant at the Town Hall to light portions of the main street on Friday nights was being | looked into by the electrical engineer, and a report was also being prepared by gas manager as to the feasability of lighting the main street with gas. ■ ■ - ■ A letter was received fro in Mr P. ft Cllmie, enclosing a• report of the ■ Power Conference Committee, emphasising the need i for economy and urging that it bo rigidly maintained. ? i The Board of Health wrote stating that, it had been advised by the Orows JU■ Office that it is not within the paye# «f1 the Board of Health to issue to the (CdimciJ authority to raise money for advances sewerage connexions to private- houses.™ .. The Works Committee reported tha* . |he. Council's estimate for highways expenditure for the year had been approved by the, Dls-' trict Highways Council; that the request".of ■ the County Couneil to take over the main-i ten'ance of boundary roads be considered when next-year's estimates are being mad* up.—The report waß adopted. The following recommendations, made by ] the Joint Committee, were approved:—That tho preliminary plan for subdivision of i fcott's estate, Percival street, be approved ! s altered; that the Papanui Sports Clnb be allowed to use High and Ashley streets for road races, subject to patrola' being appointed at Ashley street to East Bait corners, the club to be advised that further patrols should be on duty at - the railway crossings; that the Council/pay 2s 6d for each completed drainage connexion to the Health Department, as its. share of the sanitary inspector's salary;'that the borough engineer's position be considered when hi| < work in connexion with the sewerage schema is completed, which will be in about a month's time. The Finance-Committee reported that the Municipal Association's solicitor had advised that connexions outside the borough, to the sewerage system, and inside the borough, not in the sewerage area, could be made subject, to certain conditions but that the Council should not allow connexions from outside the borough until a year had pasted, so i that the system could be in thorough working j order before extra connexions were made. | Accounts'amounting to £SBOB 16a 2d were passed for payment. I In his report to the Counoll the town j clerk presented a confidential report. - He alto | said that he considered the lighting re. i strictions would net be lifted for aomc | months. He considered it would be a great i hardship for shopkeepers and others not to i have the Friday night trading fqr, say, three months, and be reeommendea that a meeting ; of business people be called to discuss the I matter, He also recommended that the i main portion of High street be lit with i S»» . The gas manager, in his monthly report, I stated that the make of gas for the past month had totalled over 00,000 cubio feet, 50 tons of coal had been carbonised, making 727,000 cnbic feet of gas. At the conclusion of the general business the Council went into committee to discuss a special report on the power shortage by the town clerk, after. whioh.it was decided to hold a special meeting next Wednesday evening further to discuss the matter. It was decided that all motor-cars parking in the streets must have a parking light.
