The trial at Old Bailey oif MichaeJ Dennis Corrigan, an engineer and exracehorse owner, who was sentenced to five years' penal servitude for fraud, •revealed an astonishing record of crime. Corrigan, Who now is 46 years oi ago. represented himself as being employed by the Standard Oil Company at a salary of £66,000 per year, tie obtained £IB,OOO from a Mrs Harrold, whose daughter he also induced to become his mistress, Corrigan being already married. He first attracted the attention of the police when he was a socond-grade steward on a steamship. He then joined the Ministry of Munitions, where -he called himself Major Cassidy. Later, for five years, he exploited imaginary concessions in the Yucatan, ruining •several victims, his frauds exceeding £IOO.OOO. Thfc judge, in sentencing him, said that the accused had been guilty ot bad and cruel frards. Cornean had shown no mercy. One wealthy man had lost everything; and was obliged to become a clerk in an .insurance office, while Corrigan lived in I"*"" at the best hotels in England and France. ... .
