RANGIORA. About 5'30 on Wednesday evening the Rangiora Fire Brigade"was called; to suppress a fire which had started in a small haystack on Mr F. Neiman's property in Bush street. Their services, however, were not required as the fire was put out before the arrival of the .Brigade. The iVorth Canterbury primarjj schools' annual football and basketball seven-a-sido tournament will be held at Dudley Park. to-morrow. There are 37 football teams, representing 17 schools, and 28 teams in the basketball events, representing 16 schools The cbmpeti- i tions will commence at 9.30 a.m. . | The annual inter-borough football match between Kaianoi and Rangiora, for the Mcintosh Shield, will be played on the : Rangiora High School grounds to-morrow afternoon. KAIKOURA. There was a good attendance at the weekly session of the W.E.A., held at the residence of Mrs F.*S. H. Warner. The subject under discussion was "National Schools of Music." The next meeting will be held at the residence of Mrs Raymond Gibson, the subject to be dealt with being "British Contempor : ary Art." The special feature of the last meet-, ing of the Brigade (Ist Kaikoura Company) was a very interesting talk by Mr Willis, on stamp collecting. Mr Willis showed part of his ov.n collection and gave many useful hints on exchanging, keeping "spares" -in transparent envelopes, etc. The boys gave Mr Willis three cheers and sang him their Brigade song. The annual meeting of members of the Kaikoura Brass Band was held when Mr E..H. Workman (president) presided Present: Messrs B. H. Workman, J. P.. Smith (secretary), S. J. f Mogridge, J. Lovett, S. A. Pluck, C. Ogden, B H. Morris, B. W. Harris, H. Austin, F. Taylor, J. Washington, J. Stußbs, and A. S. Robinson. Mr H. Austin wag re-elected a member of the Band. The secretary submitted the annual report snd balance-sheet, the latter showing receipts to have been £129 3s 9d. The credit balance for the yeai>was £2B 16s Bd. Assets exceed liabilities by £425 18s 3d. ■ Mr Mogridge, in moving the adoption of the balance-sheet, said it was gratifying to see that the finances were so satisfactory. He recommended that the value of the instruments be further reduced next year. Mr Pluck seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr S. A. Pluck gave £3 3s towards the funds, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr P. H. Flower; ; president, Mr E. H. Workman; conductor, Mr S. J. Mogridge; bandmaster, Mr A..S. Robinson; secretary, Mr J. P. Smith; librarian, Mr E. H. Morris; auditor, Mr F. H. Flower; committee, Messrs J. Lovett, C. Ogden, B. W. Harris, E. H. Morris, and J. McKenzie. - On Sunday a fire, lit near the Meriburn Camp for the purpose of burning off scrub, spread and threatened the marram grass which was recently, planted. A strong nor'-westerly. wind was blowing and this made the task of extinguishing the fire a very 1 arduous one . Men engaged digging trenches for the planting of marram grass at Mer'iburn Camp have found several Maori, ovens.
