Ladies' Championship, at Hcretatinga— October 16th to 23rd, inclusive. N.Z. Championship Tournament, Palmerston North—October 2 «* n *° November Ist. Mid-Canterbury Championship (Ashburton Golf Club) —October 25th to 27th. NOTES OF THE DAY. (By "Flagstick.") After some delay occasioned by the waterlogged condition of part of the Rawhiti Domain, the final of the Rawhiti Club's Championship was contested last week-end over 36 holes. J. Millard, an ex-champion of Avondate, and H- Throp, who, after twelve months' experience of the game has reduced his handicap to 12, were the finalists, and, as was generally anticipated, Millard ran out a winner by a substantial margin, though Throp pilt up a stiff opposition throughout, and kept the match square for 9 holes. Over 18 holes Millard had a lead of 4 up, and he then drew steadily ahead, a half at the 28th leaving him 9 up and 8 to p'lay. improvements to the course are going on steadily, several of the greens having been stripped of turf, the bed levelled, and the turt relaid. Sand hummocks obscuring the greens are being removed with scoops, giving better visibility and reducing the chances of accident. At Shirley on Tuesday last the Christchurch Ladies' Club successfully defended their possession of the Boyle Cup, won earlier in the season from the Timaru ladies, by defeating a team of Hawarden ladies, who had challenged, by four games to one. Two ol the" matches were won comfortably by the holders, but the game between Miss E. White-Fersons and Miss B Rutherford, who conteded two strokes, went to the Kith before a decision was reached. Playing very good golf, Miss Rutherford was two up after ten holes had been played, but with the aid of a stroke at O'Rorke'a Miss WluteParsons was nble to square the match at Old Nick, and going on to win the next three holes in succession waj|i3 up with 2 to play. For the vuit&rs Mrs Allen won her match against Miss N Hoare, who found herself heavilv handicapped in being required to concede ten strokes.

I Another challenge that has to be met I this week-end by the ChristchurchUnb, the holders, is one from the Timaru Club for posseession of the Orbell vm>> which is decided by match play between 8 men and 8 ladies a-sido. foursomes will be played in the morning and singles in the afternoon, and there is a possibility that the conditions will b* amended to suit the playing strength of the visitors. In the first round of match play for the Christchurch ClaVs championship, the three "back-markers" won decisively from their opponents— &. M. Macfarlane from L. A. Dougall (who had qualified by two strokes for sixteenth place after a tie with T. W. Woodroffe and W. D. Wood), by 6 and 5: G. F. Colbeck from W. T. D. Harman 5 and 4, and R. A. Wilaon from P. C. Harris 8 and 6. R. T. Tosswill, however, who wns fourth on the qualifying ,list, was hnndicapped by a severe cold, and by a long wait before starting, and could not produce anything fike his usual standard of golf, finding himself at one stage four down to his opponent, M. Macbeth. Thiß deficit was made up by the time the fourteenth was reached, but Macbeth was the steadier on the next three holes, and won 2 up. The next round should see some close finishes, and some great golf should be witnessed. In the Richards Cup, determined by match play on difference of liandicaps, two at least of the leading scorers in the qualifying rounds. J. D. Marks nud M A. Johnston,'have been eliminated, and few would be bold enough to risk ainyching on their choice of the ultimate winner. In the Cox Cup I. Scay, who headed the qualifying list, disposed of C. H. Smith, 7 up. and 6 to play, and looks a likely winner, but in none of these matches is the result a certainty. Some very fine golf was seen at Flarewood -last week-end in the semifinals of the club championship. In the lower half of the draw, J. Smith Wilson had a round of approximately 79, and defeated last vear s champion, R. G. Thomson, 2 up. The match between A. R. Blank and It. T. Tosswill was productive of very fine golf i on the part of both. Tosswill's card for tho round, though it included two sixes, equalling the par of the course, 74. Blank was leading one up at the turn, reached in 37 strokes to 38, and the match wns square at the 12th, but Blank, after leading again at the 13th, phiyed two poor holes at the 14th and IfJth intl was one down, playing to the 17th. Here bis chance seemed tost when after playing their thirds Tosswill's ball lay dead, and in a direct line for the hole, but aided by a slight slope, a beautifully judged putt found the cup, and the hole was halved—Tosswill donny one. The 18th was halved in par figures, leaving Tosswill the winner, one up. The winner was driving consistently well, and wag in great form with his putter, never failing to hole within eight feet at any hole. Tho winner staged a fine recovery nt the heavily-bunkered sixth j hole. Hades, where a short drive obi iced him to play his second wide, rpnving him with the green-side bunkers to surmount. A well-jndred pitch with his niblick left his biill within in"h«* of the hole, and a half in four resulted. The Hagley ladies' junior championship was decided early in the Week, when Mrs H. P. Lawry and Miss Betty Holmes fought out a ding-dong contest over 36 holes. The former was never down, though never far in the lead, her greater steadiness on the greens making up for Miss • Holmes's superiority in driving. Mrs Lawry was one up on the morning round, and won eventually by 2 up and 1.

Puller accounts of the play in the Australian amateur championship will be anxiously awaited in Now Zealand, especially as the final includes two of our recent visitors, H. W. Hatterslcy and Alex. Eussell, a former open champion, who captained the Victorian team. Hattersley had done remarkably well to beat L. Nettlefold in a contest which went to the 38th hole, and capped this by defeating Sloan Morpeth, one up at the 38th, this being the first time ho had been in the lead. Russell had done almost equally well to reach the final, having defeated the New South Wales champion, Eric Apperly, by 5 up and 4, and W. A. Edgar by 0 and 8. .* Before next week's notes appear the play in the American amateur championship will be nearing completion, and we shall know whether the great "Bobby" is to add a fourth of the wood's major golfing titles to the three already achieved this year. The golfing world will be on the tip-toe of expectation till the result is known. RUSSLEY CLUB. Following is the draw for the Russley Cup, to be played to-moirow:— Miß3 a. Kolines and lan Smith v.
