LOCAL LEGISLATION.
POWERS SOUGHT IN BILL , BEFORE HOUSE. [THE PBESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 17. Power is sought under one of the clauses in the Local Legislation Bill for the Timaru Borough Council to transfer the closed portion of Victoria street, which has never been actually formed into a street, to the Canterbury Education Board, providing that the Timarn South School Committee pay* all legal expenses in connexion with the transfer. At present this area of land divides the grounds of the Timarn High School into two parte. The borough of Waimate expended the sum of £2lO in 1929 in celebration of its jubilee, and a clause has been inserted in the Bill validating that expenditure. The Timara Borough Council recently decided that" instead of making additions to the present building in the way of providing additional facilities at Caroline Bay Hall for tea rooms and shelters, a new building should be erected. For the additions part of the improvement loan of £6500 had been set aside, namely, £2500, and accordingly there is a clause in the Bill for the alteration of that purpose of the Joan. It is now proposed 1 to spend the money on new tearooms and shelters. Under a clause in the Bill the sum of £8 18a 6d, spent on the Jubilee celebrations of the Lyttelton borough in 1929, has been validated. Following upon the development of the Arthur's Pass National Park as a sports area for Canterbury, certain provisions for eontrol of the area have been included in the Reserve* and Other Lands Disposal Bill introduced in the House this evening. A clause provides for the Arthur's Pass Board controlling the leasing of land comprised in the Arthur's Pass township. The clause aims at adding land to the Arthnr's Pass National Park and conferring on the (controlling board powers of leasing. The land referred to in the clause contains an aggregate area of \7 acres consisting of subdivisions in the Arthur's Pass township. The township is practically in the heart of the Park and it is felt desirable that the area should be placed under the Board with power to lease sections upon such terms and conditions as may be approved by the Minister for Lands. Some of the sections have been leased on temporary tenancy by the Canterbury Land Board as sites for huts and cottages. It is felt desirable that the Board should contaol the land and regulat* the'leasing of subdivisions.
Auhorisation of a lease by the Westport Borough Council to the Eoyal New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children is sought in ' a clause of the Local Legislation Bill introduced in the House this evening. The area referred to is vested in the Westport Borough Council for municipal purposes, and the Council is desirous of leasing it to the Plunket Society for whoso purposes it is suitable. The term of the lease is 21. years with right of renewal.
