RANGIORA. Tile annual friendly football inaicii between tlio Rakaia 4th grade team and a mixed North Canterbury junior team .was played on Dudley Park, Rangiora, on (Saturday afternoon. It resulted in a draw, oach side scoring 5 points. Mr iS. G. Dalley was referee. On Saturday morning the . visitors were shown through the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, and a visit was also paid to Andrews' twine works at AVaikuku. Although the works had been closed for tho day, Mr- - McDonald opened .them and conducted tho party over the . works, and showed them as much as possible. In tho evening the visitors had the choice of attending the pictures or the Celtic Club. Yesterday tho parly were taken to. Waikuku Beach for a day's outing, and left: for home at about 6 o'clock last evening. . KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi Male Choir hold'.avery enjoyable ladies' evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, on Saturday. Tho function was' largely attended by members and their friends, and visitors from Rangiora and Christchurch. The president (Mr J. IIBlackwell)-. expressed gratification tho number of ladies present, and spoko in appreciation of the excellent work done by the conductor (Mr G. E._ March), under whose leadership he said the choir had attained a very high standard. Between tho dances, items were given by.the choir, Mr JH. Blackwcll, Mrs C. Stewart (Christchurch') and -Mr J. Uinton (Christchurch). Dance music was supplied by Mrs A. Gra\', Messrs Oliver and W. Evans playing extras. Mr Charles Clarkson, of Ashburton, a ' former conductor of tho choir, telegraphed an apology for -liis unavoidable absence from tho gathering. KAIKOURA. Kotwitlißtandiug tho unfavourable weather conditions, there was a fair attendance'at tho first of a. scries of dances inaugurated by tho Town School Committee, in aid of the school funds. Tho danco, was held at the Drill Hall on Friday night. Messrs V. C. Hughes, J. Stubbs; nad S. GJcdaw supplied tho music. Tho' Monto Carlo one-step was won by Mr and Mrs IV S. H. Warner, and tho Monto Carlo waltz by Mr E. Watts and Mrs W. D. Sabislon. Mr JA. Johnston was M.C. , In tho primary schools' soven-a-side tournament on Saturday, • Kaikoura A dcfcatcd'Suburban by 15 to nil; Convent beat Kaikoura by 3 to nil; Puhi PjuliiKincaid' wcro defeated ■ by. Kaikoura' C, by 3to nil. In the semi-iinaf, Kaikoura A defeated Convent by 0 to nil. In the third-grado match, Scddon v. Kaikoura, the latter were victorious by 8 to 6. Tho Kaikoura School won tho liansome cup presented by Mr ClaTk and Mr G. Bartlett. Gangs of men were put on yesterday to clear a, slip a chain wide, at. the Charleville deviation. At basketball, Seddon defeated Hapiiku, by 8 to .7, and .Suburban defeated Seddon by Bto -J. Tho visitors wero entortpined at a danco in „tUc .SjlJaurban Hall in tho evening, and wcro otherwise hospitably entertained. The footballers and basketball -players-returned to Soddon yesterday morning. A collision botween cars driven by Mr C. E.'CholrnoiidcTcy ahd-Mt E. Wishart, occurred on the, ,P\i|ii Puhi i;oad,| about nine miles north of Kaikoura, lato on. Saturday afternooj). Both cars wero damaged, .but ;tho o.ccupants escaped without injury. ■, CHEVIOT. ' There was a fair attendance at'the annual meeting of tho Cheviot Croquet Club. Tho annual report showed that tho season had been the best experienced since the formation of the club, there haying been a decided improvement in tho membership. Tho balancesheet showed tho finances to be in a satisfactory condition. The election of officei'B resulted as follows:—Patroness, Mrs G. W. Fortes; president, Mrs K. J. Savage; vice-presidents, Rev. G. Widdup and Mrs W. G. Hughes; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. T. Read; auditor, Mrs P. A. Barnes; executive committee, Mesdames.W. GHughes, J. Williams, A. McLean, K. J. Savage, J. T. Read", Rev. G. Widdup, and Mr IS. J. Savage; games committee, Mesdamcs L. Cone, J. "Williams, and Miss E. ; Savage. ; The annual subscription was fixed at 10s. It was decided that the opening of the season be held in October on a date to bo arranged. On Friday last the McKenzie School fifteen travelled to Waikari to meet the Waikari School team in tho Hampson Challenge Shield match. Mackenzie were defeated by throo points' to nil, Waikari putting a penalty kick ■over-the bar. - Tho annual meeting of .the Mackenzie Tennis Club-was held-in the Cheviot. Library. Tho president (Mr C. F. Holton) occupied the chair. Tho balance-sheet, showing a satisfactory financial. position, was- adopted. ■ Tho election of officers. for tho coming season resulted as v follows: —Patrons, Hon. Georgo W -Forbes (Prime Minister) and Me E. Edridge; president, Mr C. F. Holton; vice-presidents, Messrs F. D. Child?, T. Edridge, J. S. Webb, and Dr. M. E. Irwin; club captain, Mr T. M. Cottrell; committee,. Mrs E. Marshall, Mrs W. F. Owen, Miss 0. Hughes, Miss B. Forbes, Messrs E. Winskill, E. Marshall, W. F. Owen, and It. Forbes;' secretary, Mr T. M. Cottrell; delegates, Mr C. F. Holton and Mr E. Winskill; handicapping committee, Dr. -Irwin, E. Mai-, shall, and T. M. Cottrell. The secretary was asked to convey to Mr Tweedie the club's sincere wishes for his speedy recovery. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Winskill and Edridge for their work in erecting the ; netting around . the new court. . A .vote of thanks was passed. to the ladies for their, assistance during the.past year. The question of top-dressing the courts was discussed at length, and it was decided to top-dress all the courts. Tho secretary was instructed _to write to rtlio Domain Board thanking them for their donation to the new court fund. It was decided to hold a danco in the •Public Hall. A vote of thanks was passed to the secretary for his work during the season, and it was decided to present a racquet to him as a token of appreciation for services rendered. Great interest is being taken, in the annual ball of the Cheviot Returned Soldiers* Association, which is to be held on Friday evening - next,: September 19th,-—and it is expected that the function will prove as successful as its predecessors. The music is to be supplied by Fred Smith's orchestra of six instruments and the decorations and catering are in the * hands of strong ladies' committees! —8
