"There are 270,000 boys and girls m tho Dominion, and £l2 10s a head a year is spent on the education of those in primary schools and £26 a head on those in the secondary schools." said the Minister for Education (tlie Hon. H. AtmoreJ in opening an exhibition of boys' hobbies at the Y.M£.A. in Wellington recently. Mr Atmore said it was clear that the present age belonged to youth,, and it would not bo surprising if New Zealand were to regain the lead in education it held in 1904. Four millions were spent annually upon education in the Dominion, and the boys and girls of today possessed greater advantages than their parents had enjoyed.

"Ridiculous," Mr C. W. Tho actual position was, Mr Hervey said, that up to last pay the Trust was employing 184 men; at last pay 2i men, who had been employed temporarily, were paid off; and there were now 160 men employed. T. Foster suggested that group insurance would be preferable to a superannuation scheme. Mr R. B. Owen thought that the committee should lake into consideration the staffing of tho Gardens, and the question of apprentices.

On tho other hand, Dr. Gunson said, food might become contaminated or infected after opening, and the same care as to cleanliness and refrigeration was necessary as with fresh or cooked food. The process of canning did not interfere seriously with most vitamins, and tho widespread belief that tinned food* had lost their dietary essentials was. generally speaking. without foundation. The common method of preserving canned goods was in tin and poisoning from Mn did not occur.
