LAWN TENNIS.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION MEETS. The next New Zealand lawn tennis chain pionships will be played in Christchurch starting on Boxing Day this year. At a meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association held last evening, tho secretary, Mr R. Browning, who had | becu a. delegate to the recent meeting of the | New Zealand Association, reported that before goiug lo the meetiug he had Been various delegates to tho Canterbury Association, who had expressed dissatisfaction with tho decision of the New Zealand Association to hold tho championships not earlier than January, and had said that they wanted the date put back to Christmas. A circular letter had been sent to all affiliated associations pointing out the advantages of holding the championships at Christmas, and although opposition had been anticipated, th© New Zealand Association had finally decided to rescind its previous decision and to fix the opening day for tho championships as Boxing Day. Junior Associations. Mr 11. G. Wake, who had also been a delegate to the New Zealand Association, reported on tho matter of junior associations. It was a fact, he said, that Canterbury was the only Association which possessed a junior association, for although there were delegates from Wellington and Auckland who were supposed to represent junior associations, when he cornered them they had to admit that no junior associations existed in their districts. A proposal before the meeting had been that each district association be asked to form a junior association, with tho district association as the parent body. Another proposal was that tho junior asso. ciations hold championships each year before tto New Zealand championships, the winning boy 3 aud girls to attend the New Zealand championships. At first the delegates from Wellington and Auckland had been strongly against both proposals, but finally agreed that- district associations be asked to form junior associations. They raised many objections to the proposed junior championships, but after a long discussion decided to let Mr Wake try to organise junior championships to be played this year, so that tho success or failure of tho plan could be proved. "So it may be," concluded Mr "that there will bo a junior tournament just prior to the New Zealand championships this year." The meeting formally arproved of tho action taken by Mr Wake and thanked him for his report. Mr W. Goss moved that the president of the Junior Association be ex officio a delegate to tho Association. The rule stated, he 6aid. that sub-associations had the right ' to be represented and therefore the Junior Association could have representation. Mr P. R. Harman augmented that the Jrnior Association appoint its o-.vn delegates, as many as allowed. Mr Goss agreed to this and amended his motion accordingly, Wicli was seconded by Mr ITarman and j carried.

A Competitions Committee. ]t v.-as decided to form a special interclub competitions committee, consisting of e:ght members and the secretary ex officio. 'l'h.r following were elected to the committee: —Messrs J. Mercer (HalsweU), . Clothier (Edge ware), J. O'Malley (Cathedral), W. Ilawkins (Woolston), H. Tillman iV.'aiß.uiiri), P. K. Ilarman (Opawa), J. b. Squire (Union), und A. R. Merrett (Spreydon). The special couching committee reported that arrangements had been concluded for ibo lrasfl of a couching studio. The course of coaching would be tho same aa that of laflt year, but in addition arrangements had been made for outdoor coaching at Perk, 'for which a schedule of coaching fees had been arranged. Sports Protection Association. .Mr A. IX Mcliae said that he thought it, wculd bo a good idea if the Association became affiliated with tho Sports Protection Association. Failing that, the Association should draw up a rule or cluba ehould be requested to forbid tho admittance of a man tt3 a member who had defaulted in another club. Mr W. GojS said that torno of the cluba had already joined as clubs, but the Associatiou had liover joined aa an association. Mr Browning said that it was a vital matter. He suggested that individual clubs should be instructed to apply for affiliation. Mr Mcßae aaid that if tho Association itself was affiliated it would hare moro power as defaulting members could not then play in any of the Association's competitions. Mr P. R. Harm an thought that the Sports Protection Association would not take their Association as a member as it would have to do a tremendous amount of work for tho fee received from ono club. Mr Mcßno said that was incorrect, as the Canterbury Cricket Association and the Canterbury Rugby Union were members. He pointed out that all clubs except 0110 or two might join, which would make the position unsatisfactory, whereas if the Association were a member all clubs would have to abide by the rules of the Sports Protection Association. Ho would investigate the matter and might give notice of motion to be brought up at the annual meeting of the Tennis Association. There was a largo attendance of delegates. Mr W. Goss was in tho chair.
