The monthly report of the Borough Engineer (MrH.H.Barnard), presented at last night's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council, dealt largely with the leakage of water in the town, and showed that there liad been a serious wastage. The report stated that a house to house inspection had been carried out of the water services throughout the borough. The number of faults in cisterns was 263, and in. taps 142. The leakage from,, cistern ..troubles was very considerable, and the average householder failed to report them. The effect of the inspection on the supply meant a saving of 60,000 gallons a day, and the Council was now able to do all the pumping at Heathcote within the hours of the night charges for electric current. The saving inextra charges per quarter was considably more than the cost of inspection. Cr. Sutton said the wastage was a serious matter. There was no excuse for householders wasting, watgr, as they had only to leave word at the Council office, and all minor repairs were carried out free of cost. In reply to a query by Cr.Gomer, the Mayor said that people allowing water to waste were liable to prosecution, and it might be necessary to prosecute offenders in the future.
