UNPAID RATES.

POWERS OF LOCAL BODIES. (.raiss association tilegxau.) I NEW PLYMOUTH,.August Ho. An action was brought by the Crown against the Inglewood Borough Council to determine the principal question of whether the local rating authority could exercise its power, of sale for the recovery of overdue rates on land over which the Crown held a mortgage. The judgment of Mr Justice Blair, who heard the ease at the last sessions of the Supreme Court, went in favour of the rating authority. His Honour held that they have the right to exercise powers of sale and that overduo rates are the first charge against the proceeds. Mr C. H. Weston appeared for the Crown and Mr L. M. Moss for Inglewood Borough.
